MARK WALKS AWAY UNSCATHED FROM MAJOR CRASH

POSTED ON June 27th, 2010

Mark’s European Grand Prix came to a premature end on Sunday when he suffered a horrifying accident at 300kph (185mph). At the time of the crash on lap nine, he was fighting his way through tailenders, having made an early pitstop, and he made contact with Heikki Kovalainen’s Lotus.

“Initially, I thought Heikki was going to let me through without a fight,” says Mark, “but as we approached Turn 12 he started moving towards the middle of the track. As I pulled out from his slipstream, he braked and before I knew what had happened I was pointing at the sky. The telemetry showed that he braked 80 metres earlier for that corner than I had on the previous lap, so it was completely unexpected.”

What followed was a terrifying sequence of events. Mark’s RB6 headed skywards, then landed upside down – still doing 240kph (150mph) – before hitting a kerb, flipping upright and ploughing headfirst into the barrier.

“My car felt like it was airborne for a long time,” says Mark. “I had time to worry about whether there were any bridges at that point on the track, which, luckily, there weren’t. If there had been one, I would have hit it because I went pretty high. But the car stood up to the accident well. This chassis – number 4 – has been good to me: I used it to win back-to-back races in Barcelona and Monaco, and now it’s saved me from serious injury in Valencia.

“I have a few cuts and bruises, but otherwise I’m fine. What’s frustrating was that this accident should never have happened. I understand as well as anyone that F1 isn’t a charity event; you have to fight for every position – but not when you’re five seconds off the pace and you have one of the quickest cars in the pack behind you. I mean, how long was Heikki going to stay ahead of me? Another 15 seconds? He must be asking himself whether it was worth it.”

This crash was Mark’s first retirement of 2010 and, as a result, it was the first time that he’s finished outside the points this year. As we reach the halfway point in the season, he lies 24 points behind world championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

“There’s still everything to play for,” he says. “To be 24 points behind Lewis is nothing when you consider that I scored 50 points in the space of eight days a few races ago. And we’re taking nothing for granted at Red Bull Racing; we need to continue working flat-out because our rivals are bringing updates to every race. There are now four drivers who have two wins apiece – Lewis, Jenson, myself and Seb – and it’s going to be a fascinating second half of the year.”

The next race is the British Grand Prix and Mark cannot wait to get back behind the wheel.

“We hope the RB6 will be competitive at Silverstone,” he says, “because the track has lots of high-speed corners, through which our car excels. I feel a little tender today, but I’ll be fine come the race weekend and I cannot wait to get back in the car.”

Mate that was huge thank god your O’k its truly a testimony to how safe these missiles are and how well i know you’ll continue to make us Aussies proud i would love to know why Hiekki braked so early and I’m amassed at Lotus’s team boss giving there reason on there twitter page while the race was still being run(maybe trying to cover there arse)???? all the best Mark and this was just a hiccup in your run to glory.

Michael POSTED June 28th, 2010

Bad luck today Mark. All’s well that ends well, you are all in one piece.

Palanca POSTED June 28th, 2010

I was just following his bad luck from the very race start (he was supposed to fight the first position with rival and RB “colleague” Sebastian Vettel at the start, but in a rare way electronic system of the car just failed and ended in ninth position, right close to schumacher who was 11th) so he went to pit stop to fix the car when in a sudden THIS happened. I GOT FREEZED, I was really worried about him, I was feeling like it was just happening to me… Lord wanted him to have him safe and sound

Palanca POSTED June 28th, 2010

This should never have happened! What the hell is a back marker doing trying to compete with a red bull and a driver in contention for the championship. Something has to change with these slower cars F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and these slower cars have made a mockery of every race so far by causing countless dramas for the drivers at the front of the pack. Bring back the 107% rule if you cant cut it don’t race!

john tasker POSTED June 28th, 2010

Bloody hell, we want you to fly this year Mark but not like that. Glad you are OK, You have had plenty of ups and downs before, so I am sure that you will quickly put the disappointment of Valencia behind you and be back to your winning ways at Silverstone. cheers fron Aus

Troy POSTED June 28th, 2010

first it is good to hear that your ok after the accident it is a credit to the entire red bull team to have a car that could withstand that kind of impact and allow you to walk away from it ok, i watch every race no matter what time it is on. Your doing every Australian proud and showing how tough us aussies are and i will be one of many australian motorsport fans cheering you on at the next race at silverstone (even if it will be infront of the TV). Good luck with the rest of the championship and look forward to watching you winning races in the future and hopefully a formula 1 championship with the Red bull team this year. Andy POSTED June 28th, 2010

Mark sorry for your accident but clearly you drove straight into the back of him.
Be a man admit it. Poor Hiki was a not to blame by any stretch of the imagination. Its the same as when you got the blame for Vettel driving into you. Remember how you felt when blamed so you must know how Hiki feels now.

***Site Manager***

There was never any question that Mark drove into the back of Heikki, that was clear to all who watched. The only question was why he was in a position where that could happen i.e. massive speed difference, very early braking etc. Remember, Mark has driven a Minardi, so he’s had some experience being the much slower car.

Matt & Karen POSTED June 28th, 2010

NigelG_Aylesbury POSTED June 28th, 2010

Maybe RB could exploit the movable rear wing and Marks ability to fly to introduce a new overtaking manoeuvre next year. fly over the opponent…

Lopek POSTED June 28th, 2010

“I mean, how long was Heikki going to stay ahead of me? Another 15 seconds? He must be asking himself whether it was worth it”

Your arrogance is staggering.

He had every right for his place, in fact I would say an obligation to do so for his team and for his sponsors.

If he was that much slower and was going to be that easy to overtake then why did you cock it up so completely?

You got exactly what you deserved on the day. If I was the FIA you would be penalised for Silverstone for dangerous driving that destroyed the Lotus’ day.

***Site Manager***

It is a sad indictment on your character that you would wish a crash like that on anyone.

Andrew longman POSTED June 28th, 2010

Wow glad ur ok dude. Next race at silverstone would be a good way to come back and lift that gold trophy aloft.

Victoria from FL POSTED June 28th, 2010

My boyfriend got me into F1 so I watched the tail end of last season and this is my 1st full season watching. I’ve been rooting for Mark this season…The crash almost gave me a heart attack. I see others have said that too, but it’s true. To see him get out of the car was a huge relief, but I was still shocked & bummed & wasn’t quite interested in the rest of the race… So glad he’s ok though!

Raisa POSTED June 28th, 2010

I am glad you are OK, and I am a big fan of yours, so it pains me to say this: I am surprised that you would blame Heikki for this accident. His car may not be as competitive as yours, but as you said, F1 is not charity; he was simply fighting for position. You need to own this one.

***Site Manager***

As Mark has always said, it takes two to have an accident and it’s the same in this case. However, Mark qualified on the front row (regardless of his drop down the order on lap one), had just pitted for fresh tyres and had a very slow pit stop which put him back further than he shouldn’ve been – of course Heikki was entitled to defend his position, but unfortunately with the massive speed difference, it was a lost cause for him either way. In the end Mark got caught out by the massively early braking, and once you’re that close to the back of any F1 car, you have no where to go.

Goes to show how brilliant Adrian Newey and his boys are. Fastest car on any circuit, and the safest too.

Just the one comment though – please don’t ‘do a Massa’ and let a near-death experience turn you soft. He hasn’t been the same since that happened, and has been a meek shadow of himself in 2010. Be right back on the button for Silverstone, and take the title home to Australia. I’m a Brit but I’m still pulling for you to win.

Well, I’m not a Red Bull fan, but I am a Mark Webber fan. Anyone who thinks this was an easy situation for Mark should try being “Brake checked” on the freeway sometime, the back of that vehicle is suddenly moving towards you VERY fast. How fast in F1? 150 mph difference in 1.5 seconds? I can say that Red Bull has the right man for the job, seeing Mark toss that wheel like he had just had a bad day at the office rather than one a flight in a vehicle designed to stay on the ground was humorous and a great relief, and reminds me of an AC/DC song about parties. Great job, and I’m saving up for a trip down under, I have to see an entire country full of folks with your mettle!

Perhaps you were too fast but Heikki braked too early! It was a racing accident, but pay more attention in next races, please!

Mark, I was sick in the stomach when I saw the stack. I can’t imagine how you felt as a passenger. So glad you’re OK.
Just remember, it will make the world championship win be a lot sweeter.
True Aussie grit!

Eric POSTED July 04th, 2010

Mate you know better than any of us that racing is a tough & potentially dangerous game & F1 is at the pinnacle. Isn’t it amazing how some of these arm chair experts know what you did wrong without any concept of how difficult it is to be an F1 driver. I’m happy you & Heikki are ok & am sure you have both learnt something from the accident.

Keep up that self belief mate because we all know you can do it. Whatever the results there is plenty of us that are proud of you.

With a bit of luck & the teams hard work you might just get there.

Cheers mate
