Australian GP: The Team Reaction

Sunday 27 March

Car 1 Sebastian Vettel
Finish position: 1st, Start position: 1st
“I’m very pleased, it was a very good weekend and I had a very nice car to sit in this afternoon. It was a good race – towards the end things calmed down a bit. Lewis Hamilton didn’t push as hard, so we tried to control the last part of the race. I don’t think it was easy today. The start was crucial and being on the clean side I had a very good getaway. I didn’t know if it was enough, but then I saw Lewis and Mark battling for position. I got a cushion on lap one and we tried to hold the gap for the first stint. When the tyres went off, Lewis caught up and we came in. I think it was the right time, as I couldn’t have done more laps. After my first stop it was crucial to get past Jenson Button, which I did. That was important. In the second part of the race I didn’t know what was going on behind Lewis, if he was under pressure or not, but towards the end of the race I could control it more. We learned a lot of things today. It’s good coming here after a long winter and setting the pace.”

Car 2 Mark Webber
Finish Position: 5th, Start Position: 3rd
“I wasn’t quick today and it was the same in qualifying yesterday, so we need to understand the reason why. There wasn’t much else I could do today. I lost the last position to Fernando Alonso during the pit stops and that was it really. It was very frustrating. Seb drove a good race, in terms of what the car can do, but it’s not normal for me not to go and match the rhythm at the front. I should be able to stay with these guys, but today I finished a long way behind. It was a tough race and I was pushing as hard as I could, but I wasn’t getting much back. To finish that far behind is not really usual, but let’s stay cool; it’s the first race. I’m looking forward to going to Malaysia; I wish the race was tomorrow already. I was in a different race to Sebastian today, so we had to do different things. I was in trouble with the tyres much sooner than he was, so we need to have a look why.”

Christian Horner, Team Principal
“It was a fantastic performance by Sebastian today. He’s been dominant all weekend and to turn up and win the first race with a faultless drive was fantastic. It’s testimony to all the hard work that’s gone in over the winter and to have book-ended the two championships by winning the last race in Abu Dhabi and the first race here is a fantastic achievement. We’re also very proud to have won Pirelli’s first race on its return to Formula One. The tyres were as expected in the race, with a combination of two and three stops and, while it was a bit of a voyage of discovery with the new rules, it was a fantastic to come here and dominate a race that we’ve historically struggled at. Unfortunately things didn’t work out for Mark at his home grand prix and we need to understand why. We took a slightly different strategic route with him running the harder tyre second, as his degradation seemed to be higher than Sebastian’s. It’s something we need to look into on Mark’s car, as it was an unusual difference between them this weekend that we don’t normally see between them. I’m sure that will be back to normal for Malaysia.”

Cyril Dumont (Renault)
“It was an excellent race for Sebastian. I think it’s the first time that he’s finished this race and in that position is very good! I think Mark got a solid result, although I am sure he will be disappointed. We’re sure he will come back strongly in Malaysia. For Renault to have two engines on the podium this weekend is a very good result.”

The last race of the year is what counts. Seb won on the championship on the last race last year and you can this year. Alonso came back to lead the 2010 chmpionship from about 50+ points behind. Remember Seb is a good driver and nobody doubts it. Take it for what it is. He is in line for the F1 thrown. However, he is not the king yet. Be wise as you are and plot an F1 season, race hard, tactics and take a few risks. People wnat Seb to win and but people also want you to suceed. Don’t listen to the detractor listen to your head and and follow your dreams. Also chat to Ferrari about a drive next year (make it know you are in discussions with them – Get Flavio to earn his agents fee by dropping a few rumors). I bet RBR help a bit more out then. Massa on his way out you could hbe in!

Mark,
MAte you drove a good race it was a completely different race to thats of seb’s. Iguess we all know the reason why and how these bureaucrats work. Well dont let it get to you…RBR knows people are watcing and Seb knows if it wasnt for RBR giving him the equipment he had he wouldn’t have pulled out such a big lead mate….Well he know it wasn’t a fair race and that’s going to trouble him as much as he doesn’t think it will…..Anyway long way still RBR can’t control weather and traffic and other drivers and vartiables which are hard to control….so chin up mate….you will get there..J

Noel POSTED March 29th, 2011

You can do anything Mark….. If Red Bull let you!

dredgie POSTED March 29th, 2011

its very hard when you have the owner of the company rbr sitting in the other car

Aïcha POSTED March 29th, 2011

You are the best!!!

Nick Frawley POSTED March 29th, 2011

Don’t let it get you down Mark, the first race is under your belt so now your race engineer can pull all the telemetry from you and Seb’s car and find a way to close that gap. Early days mate.

JulianR POSTED March 29th, 2011

Last Sunday was a reflection of what F1 has become. Vettel is a dream for the team and F1 – but it’s a sad day when you have to beat your own team to win!
Good Luck

Hey Mark,
How are you?
I know you will be feeling crappy bout your result, but we know what you are capable of and can bounce back next race. I don’t want to disrespect RBR, but to me it seemed as though you were in a completely different car. (parts wise) Maybe im pullin at straws, maybe not. Anyway, i know your a gun and you can drive. Need to 4get Aus and concentrate on Malaysia, because at least you got some decent points and you can power on from there. Your fans are behind u, and i know u can do it. I saw your ‘eye of the tiger’ last year and all your other years. You need to find it again.
Take Care Champ. You will be on the top pillar of the podium very soon.
Your No 1 Fan, Abs.

SJT POSTED March 28th, 2011

I thought team drivers should get the same cars and it’s up to the drivers to perform but at rbi it’s not what you are but who you are. Keep your chin up mark all of OZ are behind you mate.

FormulaNone POSTED March 28th, 2011

It’s a long season. The main thing is you finished in the points. A DNF would have been much worse. No one cares where you come at the start of the season

Law POSTED March 28th, 2011

You’re still a champion. Go get ‘em.

mariella POSTED March 28th, 2011

Isn´t bad, isn´t great. Collected some points and info, so let´s work. :)

Barrie Braxton POSTED March 28th, 2011

Remember “one swallow does not make a summer”. I’m sure we will here you with those immortal words when you had your first win!

Michaela Kuchařová POSTED March 28th, 2011

It was the first race and I think 5th place is a good result. Come on, Mark! I will look forward to see you as a winner.

johnnymountford POSTED March 28th, 2011

the result again reflects the level of support you can expect from RBR this year. don’t mean to be a cynic but…….AUSSIE GRIT mate.

Eva POSTED March 28th, 2011

Mark, I am sorry you did not get to the podium at your home race. I was surprised to see the huge difference in performance between you and Sebastian, it looked like you both drove completely different cars.
However this is just the beginning of a large season and I am pretty sure you will get back to the top. Go ahead and show all of us what are you made of.
Very best.

Tony Toth POSTED March 27th, 2011

Come on Mark, don’t let it get you down. One day you will crack it for a win in Aus. Hope you can come to grips with the package in Malaysia and the races after that.
