Mark dominated the Brazilian Grand Prix to take the seventh win of his career and his second at Interlagos. He came home 17 seconds ahead of his Red Bull Racing team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
“It was a very positive way to end the year,” said Mark. “It was my second win at the track, following my victory in ’09, and I put in a pretty tasty drive. I’d like to dedicate the win to Bob Woods, a close family friend, who’s very ill at the moment. This win is for him.” Mark started the race from second place following a fabulous scrap with Vettel for pole. He then carried that competitive pace into the race. “I had a very, very close fight with Sebastian [Vettel] for pole position on Saturday,” said Mark. “We pushed each other extremely hard, which made it a good challenge and very exciting.”
“In the race I was strong in the middle and back part of the stints, which was good. I did a three-stop strategy and didn’t have any nervous moments, except when Fernando [Alonso] took some time out of me around the first pitstop. I had a bit of traffic on my out-lap, but sometimes that’s the way it goes.”
Mark’s afternoon was made easier when Vettel’s car began to suffer from a gearbox problem. That took away any immediate pressure and allowed Mark to enjoy the closing laps of the race, in which he took his seventh fastest lap of the year. “I was a bit disappointed that Sebastian had a gearbox issue because it would have been nice to race him wheel-to-wheel,” said Mark. “But that’s motorsport. You’ve got to take the rub of the green when you can. We’ve all been on the receiving end of that sometimes.”
The 25-point haul for victory saw Mark secure third place in the drivers’ championship, one point ahead of Alonso. It was a just reward after a sometimes-demanding season. “People asked me after the race if I felt a sense of relief at taking my first win of the year,” he said. “The answer’s yes because we all compete to win, but there were some positive things even before Brazil. Look at my performance in Abu Dhabi: given the damage we had on the car, I was very pleased with my pace there. “Winning in F1 is a team effort and everyone on my car, and particularly my engineers Gavin Ward and Ciaron Pilbeam, richly deserved this victory. They’ve worked their nuts off all year, during what’s been a pretty trying season at times and it was good to get the win for them.”
Earlier in the weekend, Mark had collected the DHL Award for setting the most fastest laps this year. He had already secured this with an unassailable six fastest laps but couldnt resist the temptation to add a seventh on the final lap of the race.
The F1 season might now be over, but Mark still has a lot to do before putting his feet up over Christmas. First stop is Australia for the Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge. “I land in Hobart on Saturday night,” says Mark. “I’m really looking forward to getting there because it’ll be great to unwind and share in other people’s challenges. The participants are really going to test themselves in Tassie, while raising some good money for charity. It’ll be very rewarding to see that after all of the hard work put in by everyone involved in the Challenge.”
Mark is in Australia for five days before heading to India for the FIA prize giving and then back to Europe to do some work for Red Bull including the team’s celebratory F1 show car run in Milton Keynes, England on December 10. He’ll then split his time between Australia and Europe for the rest of the winter, before concentrating on the job again in February.
“Thanks to all of my fans for your continued support this year,” says Mark. “We’ll come back stronger in 2012!”

Hi Mark,
F1 is something special to me. It gives me time, which I can truly enjoy, even when I’m shouting at the TV. My favourite F1 team: Red Bull racing – favourite driver: you. No question about it, that my boyfriend and me, had to join the RBR event in Milton Keynes, because it isn’t just 2 hours away from where we’ve lived in England.
Usually we had our arguments, because of right and wrong directions to Milton Keynes. Nothing serious, but it is every time the same. The different this time: we haven’t got these kind of arguments for months. But this time, we just took a day off. Just enjoyed ourselves, without work, without worries, without everything, just to spent time with each other and have fun.
First we were standing in front of the garage, have taken some great pictures and changed our position to stand in first row on the street. The pictures in my mind, I will never forget, as well as the sound of the warm up of the engine. It was awesome. When you came with your car, drove past us, breathtaking. Then the smell von DCs car rubber was awful, but still amazing, then followed the motorbike and in the end Sebastian and so on. I tried to catch every single moment, every second, just to get as much impressions as possible.
But every picture, I mentioned before weren’t THE special moment. I don’t know how many hours we spent on that street but it was quite a looooong time. I was jumping around, because my feet were not my feet anymore. Some people went past, like the men for security or a Red Bull man with a fire distinguisher or some people from the press and some Infiniti cars as well. I watched in every car, just in hope to see you. But I was laughing about myself, because that was bullshit. It won’t happen.
And suddenly, another car past, then silence, nobody was chatting, I didn’t forget to freeze, “Was it Mark?” Asked my partner dumbfounded. I looked at him, started slowly to smile and just said, “Yes”. The time seems to stand still.
It was suddenly real, I’ve seen you. The man from the TV with the Red Bull car, the man who is quite accessible for his fans over twitter, the man who is doing such a huge charity event, the man who I could say 1000 times and more, thank you for doing what you are do, and I don’t just mean to be the F1 driver. I mean the nice guy around the corner, who is doing an retweet to a girl who had to do pancakes for his brother until you rescued her with another tweet, or the funny conversation with Jenson about sperm and chopsticks, or just the tweet to a man, who tried to get his girls into the bath or that you mixed up Simba with a squirrel; just funny easily conversation who give me a laugh, just small things who shown, that you are even a person like other, but at the same time, somebody who is doing a lot of charity, the big Tasmania challenge as well as small things for an auction and so on, but in the end (even when it is just for advert), every piece which you give, gives other people support. Mark, thank you for the 2011 F1 season and the things around F1.
But Mark, thank you as well for this unforgettable impression on Saturday. Thank you for given me these smile. I hope, you could see, smiles like mine in other people faces, who were directly in front of you close to the garage. I think, you give so many people moments like this and I hope, that especially those moments you can still see in these faces as well and enjoy it. Every fan may have other reasons to get and to give you a smile, mine is this surprising moment when you pasted me and not to forget, to spent one day with my partner, without thinking on moments we’ve had to gone through in 2011. Thank you Mark!
I wish you a merry Christmas! Have a great time in Australia! Enjoy surfing!
PS: During our way back we had the second argument about the temperature in the car. I was still freezing when he tried to open the window. As usual, small things which even let you smile, while you are having an argument.
