Mark drove one of his best races of the season but even a series of fastest laps wasn’t enough to get him onto the podium in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He came home in fourth place, nine seconds behind Jenson Button.

“I was happy with the way I drove but the race was frustrating,” says Mark. “You get what you deserve in racing but this was very tough. Had I had a clean race I could have challenged Jenson for the podium, but that wasn’t the case.”

Mark’s first issue occurred almost immediately when the sidewall from Seb Vettel’s punctured tyre lodged itself onto the leading edge of his left sidepod on the second lap and spent the remainder of the race wedged there.

“It certainly cost me downforce and grip – once the boys have had the chance to analyse the data, we’ll know by how much,” says Mark, “The thing that really sealed my fate though was the five seconds I lost at my first pitstop due to a problem with the right-rear wheel-nut, and as a consequence I lost time behind Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado.”

Maldonado got a penalty, but that didn’t make up the three seconds that Mark lost trying to lap him, and it meant he had to wait until his second stop before he could mount a challenge on Massa. At this point he switched onto a three-stop strategy – the only driver to do so.

“It’s not often you stop for tyres on the final lap of a race, but a three-stop strategy was worth trying. We had nothing to lose but it was risky.

“Jenson and I had a good ding-dong early on with lots of passing and re-passing. It’s always good to fight with him and Fernando [Alonso]; there’ll be a day when it might not work out but generally it’s good, clean stuff between us. It’s enjoyable.”

Mark now returns to the UK, before heading to Brazil next week for the final race of the year. “I enjoy racing at Interlagos and the atmosphere there is amazing.” says Mark, ”I’ll do my best to end the season on a high note. Such is the layout of the track that we usually get good races there, so let’s hope I can be in the thick of it once again.”

Hi Mark,
Great race in Abu Dhabi, you give us Aussies living in the UK a lot to cheer about.
You have the speed, good luck in Brazil.

I could not understand why you kept on over taking in the first DRS zone, only to be overtaken right away in the second DRS zone. This happened on quite a few laps and I was thinking to myself, why doesn’t Mark just wait until the second zone to overtake and then you would have the rest of the lap to pull away and not be overtaken. Is there any reason you could not have done this? Best of luck in Brazil.

It should have been your race, but in the most bizarre way, chance allowed accidental sabotage, via Seb’s tread…holy smokes! Still, you fought well, then the pit stop…I would not be alone in thinking, why were you pulled in then? And then the delayed pit stop…mistakes? Okay, they happen, but, one thing I always wonder about, Seb’s car seems to run faster on the straight than your car. Get your team to pull there fingers out, and get them to stratergize better, (only one to three stop)so YOU WIN!! You are a true ambassador for sport, and a gentleman, you earned our respect, you didn’t have to demand it, as someone else petulently cried out not so long ago… GOOD HUNTING IN BRAZIL, you are in our hearts.

I wish someday you read this.. if you drive pissed off, or with a objective, you can be the fastest guy on track. Start a race like you already are loosing, and that race will be yours! cheers :D

I don’t really know what’s going on…

You have been pushing, fighting, always giving your best with solid races, brilliant drives BUT the results are disappointing..

Mark, you’re an excellent driver, a big fighter,a down to earth and very straight talking guy. That just make the current situation more sad for me. It’s so frustrating to see you struggling for race results because YOU ARE FAST!

This shocking first pit stop cost you a lot, it was like an eternity… Considering the “team” put you back, “finger’s” flappy thing under your car and the back markers P4 was the maximum…

Even RB7 doesn’t have the straightline speed which was a big factor in Yas Marina, really, really great stint setting fastest laps the whole way.. :)

All the best for Interlagos champ! Please, please, please with some GOOD LUCK this time!!

Anton POSTED November 17th, 2011

Red Bull really need to provide better race strategy for you as you often end up running in dirty air which compromises your overall pace. The RB7 is very bad at overtaking with low top speed, and poor performing KERS. When you were in clean air you were the fastest man on the track. Running longer than Button was the right decision but it should have been for several laps so you would have a significant tire advantage at the second round of stops. Or switching to the Prime tire would have been another strategy and running the Options again at the end of the race where you can get the speed differential required to pass more easily.

Lets concentrate on the positives. Great race by you and congrats on getting the fastest lap. Better luck in Brazil.

Max POSTED November 16th, 2011

Great drive Mark. Very unlucky with the first pit stop. Maybe you could’ve challenged JB on the prime but hard to make the pass stick at Abu Dharbi, especially when your car is so slow in a straight line haha! Anyway you had great pace at the end and got fastest lap. Hope you finish with a win at Brazil, you deserve it!

Bring on Brazil. At some point your luck has to change. Effort equals reward, and given what you’ve put in you’ve gotta have a big one coming…

Hi Mark,
I don`t know even what to say… It hurts. No, IT HURTS!!!
Do you know how it looks like? They cut your wings. Specially or not, one way or another.
Where have you spent all your luck? Or is it still waiting for you somewhere? Hope it is so.
The best and the kindest wishes to you, as always.

Tommo POSTED November 15th, 2011

Ah, so that explains it, so even he DNF seb was literally still trying to pull you back with his tyre. Irony. Yo could see that floor and pod underside flapping and the commentators picked up on that as did i. There is alot to be said for those back markers, and not much of it is good. You grabbed what you could and did what was possible and at least the points are there. Onya-Mark!

Petra POSTED November 15th, 2011

Hi Mark,
I was shouting at the TV during the race. And I can’t imagine how frustrated you were (I suppose) in your car. But what was really count in my eyes, that you didn’t give up. It’s really impressive. Well done Mark!
Petra
