Race: 1
Q: 6th
R: 8th
The Bahrain Grand Prix gave the world a first glimpse of what to expect during the 2010 World Championship, and the omens are good for Mark and Red Bull Racing. The RB6 proved its credentials as a potential race winner, even if Mark’s own chances of a podium disappeared in a couple of moments of oversteer during qualifying.
“The first sector of my qualifying lap was good,” says Mark, “but a rear lock-up into Turn 16 lost me 0.2s and I lost another 0.4s at Turn 19 when I was pushing too hard trying to get it back. That dropped me to sixth on the grid and, as I was to discover during the race, it would be very hard to make progress up the order.”
Mark made a surprisingly good start from the dirty side of the grid and was dicing with the Mercedes pair of Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg into Turn 1. He was lining up an overtaking manoeuvre through Turn 2 when his Renault engine momentarily lost power, losing him momentum and a place to Jenson Button.
“We’re not quite sure what happened,” says Mark. “It looks like the engine sucked in a bit of oil, causing it to cough and send out a big puff of smoke. Those of you who watched the race on television will have seen it.”
The glitch didn’t stop Mark for long, however, because he was back ahead of Jenson in seventh place within a couple of corners and closing down on Schumacher. But that was to be his final overtaking manoeuvre of the race.
“It got pretty boring,” says Mark. “I spent 48 laps staring at a the gearboxes of first Schumacher and then Button and there was nothing I could do to pass them. I tried everything: different lines, pressure – everything. But they’re both good drivers and neither of them made a mistake.”
Mark made his only pitstop of the race on lap 16, when he changed from the super-soft rubber that he’d used in Q3 (a new rule for 2010) to Bridgestone’s medium compound. A problem with the front right tyre cost him four seconds and dropped him back behind Jenson, in eighth, which is where he stayed for the remainder of the race.
“I was quicker than him,” says Mark, “but I was unable to find a way through. He didn’t make a mistake and if I’d tried to force the issue it would have ended in a crash. I was pretty shocked by how hard it was to overtake and it doesn’t bode well for any of the one-stop races on the calendar, when everyone is going to be following pretty much the same strategy. We can only hope that other circuits will lend themselves to overtaking more than Sakhir.“
Looking ahead, there’s plenty for Red Bull Racing to be upbeat about.
“The RB6 was competitive in Bahrain,” says Mark, “which proves what a phenomenal job the guys in Milton Keynes have done over the winter. We’ve now got to put the icing on the cake by getting the results that the car deserves on a Sunday afternoon; we’ve done it in the past and I’m absolutely sure that we’ll do it again.”

Go for it, Mark, I have been in your corner since your first AGP those years ago! A win in next weekend’s AGP would certainly come in handy!
Well done in Bahrain Mark – better luck for Melbourne. I would like to see the wings reduced severely. Their development has no relevance to road cars. The result would be slower cornering, more tyre wear, more overtaking opportunities. Sure you’d lose grip – that means you would find the limits at a safer speed. The loss of refuelling removes a variable but those rigs were expensive, unreliable and potentially dangerous so I don’t want them back but we need more excitement!
I have been watching F1 since 1980, the aussie jones era.Till 1999 F1 was fantstic in my opinion. Now f1 seems mundane.Technology new rules became more prevalent, and money set in since then. The new rules now seem silly to me, but by same token i don’t know them fully. In my mind, why not just put a cap on the amount of money a team can spend for a season.Bugger the rules about tyres ect, why not say this is how much you spend to teams for a season, lets see what you can do withit.
I recon bernie eccltston, not sure how to spell , is not doing a good job for f1.
I recon mark has done a good job, minardi was good for him, jaguar wasn’t good, redbull has been very good. I just hope mark has a wonderful year,he deserves a F1 crown.Mark has an amazing ability to pass someone from the outside from time to time.Thats a rare thing in F1.Alan jones had an ability to pass at odd occasions too.Mark has the ability, just not in right team at right time, go redbull and webber, i recon this year will be a damn good one for mark, he fully deserves it
Hey Mark, I’ve followed F1 religiously since your amazing first race in the wet in Melb.
I love the strategy with fuel and tyres and the driver and engineering/team skill needed to win.
With the cars these days simply unable to perform in dirty air and thus almost no passing, last year your fuel/tyre strategy made the races fun to watch.
I’m afraid last week was a few hours of my life that i’d like back if I had the choice. No strategy and no passing. If Melbourne is equally boring i’ll wait until they re-introduce fuel stops to watch again…
Having said that the real race is qualifying so maybe if they moved that to the Sunday instead it would be fun to watch. Good luck in qualifying this week!
land her on pole mate,
Hey Mark, like everyone else, im a mad fan. Now more than ever its all about quallies, screw any strategy other than putting that baby on pole. As for Vettel, show the world the truth mate and dont think, just do. Cheers
Hey Mark, damn shame about so many stupid regulations coming in with the sport. One minute it’s all about how they’ll increase overtaking and then some ridiculous rules are put in place which completely do the opposite.
Best of luck in Melbourne next weekend and go for the win! Webber for 2010 champion!
Go Mark. Good luck next race.
Great effort Mark. Can’t wait when F1 comes to my hometown in a couple of days
Hi Mark,
I have followed you and your racing ever since you landed in europe. I was absolutely beside my self whe you finally won your first F1GP last year. I never lost faith in you and your abilities. I know this year is your year and after seeing the performance of the new car I know you can make it happen this year.
Best of luck this for the Australian GP. MW no1 for the Australian GP.The whole country is behind you mate.
Go for it!!

Mark,
Stick it on pole in Melbourne and show give your Aussie fans the sweetest of all victories….a home win. I remember what you used to be able to get out of a Jaguar in qualy….and with the weapon you have now…it’s time to shine! GO FOR IT!
I’m with you Ed, If Mark is not at the front, he needs to pit and get into clear air – it is the only way to have some pace !
mark you tryed hard better luck in australia i love f1 and have done for 20 years but that race was boring why can they not leave things alone the sport will lose a lot of fans if they do not remedy this quickly. have a good one mark
cheers

Great signs for the season ahead mate. You know you can be a gun on the one lap quali – you’ve proven that before. Get that clear track and push!
As for the rules, I reckon only a change to the aero will help. It should be set up so you can follow the car in front without losing downforce. Then there will be no road blocks – fastest guy wins.
By the way, did you ever think Schumi would be your road block? ![]()
Good luck for the season Mark
Looking forward to seeing you at the MWSC function in Melbourne (Dave’s done a great job again!) and then seeing you stick it on Pole at your home race. God knows, you’ve been starved of success at home, and now it’s time to rectify it and silence those last few doubters who still remain down here.
Hi Mark, I knew you would win a GP last year, well two in fact,Even since your first GP race I knew you had it in you to achieve this. I felt so proud for you. I have and so have my so two young sons always had faith in your driving. I cant wait to see you collect the drivers championship.I only wish one day myself and the boys could see you race live. Good luck for 2010 and in Melbourne ( only wish the GP was in Brisbane
and well done on the first race of the year. Cheers Jason
Mark. You might as well post your report for Melbourne now.
It would go something like this.
Schuey dropped second gear. Hamilton blew his right front and well .. I just shot past them all and never saw another gearbox….
… something like that – pls??
Hey Mark, Nail that one lap in qualy mate.
First off, congratulations for such a fantastic season last year. It silenced the tall poppie killers…for a while.
I was never a fan of the no refueling rule and when this was being bandied about last year my heart sank.
I have been arguing for your merits since your sports car days!
Good luck in Australia. Put your qualifying lap in on vapours and get on the front row.
If you get beaten to the first corner pit before anyone else – seems like there would be a bit of latitude with the tyres in cooler Melbourne and the clear air from the early pit stop will ensure you hit the front while the others pit. (Simple ain’t it?) Your car is pretty funky fast compared to the others especially in the corners. (Congrats to Red Bull there)
Best of luck again and have fun dude.
Good try Mark you deserved a better result. but as per previous comment the cars are too wide too much grip and really not much difference between the top 12 hence another year of PROCESSIONS pole will win on balance provided no failure mechanical. I love F1 but wow we need to see changes so that drivers not cars make the race. Having said that a good hard fought drive and better luck in Melbourne
Chin up Mark. Get stuck into them in Melbourne.
Can’t wait for Melbourne where I am sure Mark will have a bit more luck as clearly there was more pace on hand. Still good to walk away with some points.
Hey Mark, After watching the Hulk trying to overtake Kovy 8(3sec per lap difference). You guys have no chance in overtaking. I love my F1 but no this refuelling has made it boring. Watching a procession of “fat” slow car is not what F1 is about. It will kill off public interest if one car dominates. They need to make it two compulsory tyre stops. Or reduce the number of people in pit lane, or standardise the rattle guns. I would prefer it is done on track, but they need to do something!!!
Good luck in Australia and better luck in qualifying.
Cheers,

See u in Melbourne, there every year without fail. This year let’s make it pole followed by a win. So get all these so called friends who are critics of my back.
