Mark Webber Announces Support for Aussie FIFA World Cup Bid

Sydney, 10 May 2010

Coming off the back of a win in the Spanish Grand Prix overnight, Champion Formula 1 driver Mark Webber has today announced his support for Australia’s bid to host a FIFA World Cup™  in 2018 or 2022.

“The race to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to Australia is on,” said Webber.

“Like Formula One driving you need belief, passion and Aussie grit to be successful. As a proud Australian, I am delighted to support our nation’s bid to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to Australia in 2018 or 2022.,” he added.

Webber joins fellow Australians -  swimmer Ian Thorpe and Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman – in publicly supporting Australia’s efforts to bring the FIFA World Cup™ to Australia.

“A FIFA World Cup in Australia would be fantastic for all Australians. We are thrilled to have someone of Mark’s calibre behind us,” said Ben Buckley, CEO of Football Federation Australia.

The FIFA Executive Committee will make a decision on the hosts for the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018 and 2022 on 2 December 2010 at FIFA Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.  Today Australia’s documentation in support of the Bid left Sydney for Zurich. The Bid Book will be submitted to FIFA this Friday 14 May.

All Australians can show their support of Australia’s bid by adding their name at australia2018-2022.com.au.

Todo lo que haga esta genial, es un corredor de fondo, una persona de esas que ves pelear siempre, te mereces todo lo bueno que te pase porque ademas de buen profesional pareces mejor persona, una fan española incondicional desde hace 3 años.

I’m from Brazil and lived in Australia from 2007-2008. That is a great country!!! It would be great to have a FIFA WC in Australia. Mark Webber will be the next F1 world champion!!!

Even though you’re making it big o/s youve never forgotten your roots. Good on you for staying Aussie true. Istanbul win should have been yours..
Tsk tsk to your little team mate

Hi Mark, what a great drive last night, if not for a spoilt little sook of a team mate, who has no gut’s at all about being a team mate, you would have your third in a row. Red Bulls lake of backbone in supporting your position is trully disappointing….The protest on the Red Bull Web site is amazing, in it’s support for yourself. Good luck for the rest of the season, and bring home the bacon…Cheers Ken Kilpatrick Adelaide Australia

Hi Mark. During a very recent trip to view the Millau Bridge my wife and I got talking to a young Aussie who was viewing the Bridge at the same time. He mentioned his keenness in motor racing an giving assistance to you in your recent mishap. He then told us he was on his was to watch the Tennis in Paris. He also mentioned he was a doctor and had spent some time in London where I come from. Our French friend casually mentioned on our way home that this chap could have been your brother. Your photo shews some resmblance, are we mistaken or do you have a brother having agood break from the daily grind? Best of luck. Arthur Marsh

I never write to sport, or for that matter any celebrities, but I just had to comment on how unjust I felt the accusations were in the Turkish incident. As I watched my immediate reaction was “What the Hell was that”. Similar to my reaction to Schumachers move in Monaco a few years ago.
Anyhow, I’m really glad you have been resigned and want to wish you the best of success in WINNING the championship!!
