Council to hold civic reception to honour Mark Webber

POSTED ON March 15th, 2010

Queanbeyan City Council will host a civic reception to honour the outstanding achievements of Mark Webber in the 2009 Formula One season. The civic reception will be held on Monday March 22, 2010 at 12.30pm and will see Mark travel down Monaro St in a motorcade before arriving at the Council Chambers at 253 Crawford St where a reception will be held.

“Queanbeyan is proud of all of its sporting stars and is honoured to have such high-quality sports people representing it on all levels,” Queanbeyan Mayor, Cr Tim Overall. “The people of Queanbeyan have followed Mark’s career closely and the town celebrated as one when he crossed the finish line in Germany to record his first Grand Prix victory.

“Such an amazing performance deserves to be honoured and Queanbeyan City Council will host a civic reception for Mark on Monday March 22, 2010. Members of the public are invited to line Monaro St and then move around to the Council Chambers for the reception.”

The Queanbeyan-born driver enjoyed his most successful year in Formula One and fulfilled a life-long dream when he won his first Grand Prix. Mark went on to win another Grand Prix and recorded a further six podium finishes during the season. This effort culminated in Mark finishing fourth in the Drivers’ Championship, just 7.5 points out of third place.

“Mark has put in a lot of hard work during his career and endured a few tough years in Formula One,” Cr Overall said. “But we all knew that with the right car, Mark had the talent needed to compete with the world’s best.”

The civic reception will be held in the week leading up to the season’s second event, the Australia Formula One Grand Prix which will be held in Melbourne. The season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix from 12-14 March.

“I thank Mark for taking some time out of his busy schedule to be available for this civic reception,” Cr Overall said. “I would also like to wish him the best of luck for the upcoming season and let him know that Queanbeyan will be right behind him.

“I would love to see a huge crowd line Monaro St between the bridge and Crawford St on Monday 22 March to congratulate Mark on a fantastic season and wish him all the best for the 2010 season.”
