Old habits die hard!

A controversial Malaysian Grand Prix ended with Mark coming home in second place. He crossed the line four seconds behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel, but the talk after the race was of how Vettel had disobeyed team orders.

“I felt like I drove well today,” says Mark. “The beginning of the race went well for me: I made a good start and was leading the race with 10 laps to go. The team made a decision, which was for us to look after the tyres and get the cars to the end of the race. I turned down my engine and was cruising, but Seb made his own decisions today and he will have protection [within the team]. That’s the way it goes.”

By the latter stages of the 56-lap race, the Red Bulls were under no threat from other cars. The Mercedes’, in third and fourth, were more than 12s back and Mark was fully expecting Sebastian to adhere to the team’s wishes.

“As far as I was concerned,” says Mark, “the fight was off. We know Seb’s a quick peddler, but I was disappointed with how he behaved. In the end the team did a good job; we had some good pitstops and made the right calls. I had a lot of support from Australia around the racetrack and I want to say thanks to the guys who flew here to cheer me on; I did my best.”

Mark started the race from fifth place, after a rain-affected Q3 on Saturday afternoon created a topsy-turvy grid. All of the top 10 runners completed the session on intermediate tyres and on a drying track the fastest times were set by the last people to cross the finish line.

“It was disappointing to qualify fifth,” says Mark. “We didn’t get the last part of Q3 right; we were quick enough to start much higher up, but we misjudged the clock. I went slowly on what I thought was my penultimate lap to conserve the tyres, when in fact it was my final lap. We’ve learnt from it.”

Half an hour before the start of the race rain fell and all of the cars started the race on intermediates. Mark made a flier from fifth on the grid to be second by the end of lap one. When Vettel pitted on lap five, Mark took the lead of the race – something that he wasn’t to lose until the controversial incident with Vettel 10 laps from the end.

“There were a lot of things going through my head in those closing laps,” says Mark. “Not just from today, but from the past as well. There are three weeks before the next race; let’s see what happens in the future.”

Mark heads from Malaysia to Queensland in Australia for some R&R, before returning to the UK at the beginning of April for a simulator session at Red Bull Racing headquarters in Milton Keynes prior to the next race, the Chinese Grand Prix, on 14 April.

“This time tomorrow I’ll be catching a few waves on my surfboard and reflecting on everything that’s happened. I hope the weather’s good.”

encourage Mark you are the winner of this race but the points have been given the Vetel. For very good team that is not you deserve, you deserve a better deal both in sports and personally. Consider next season and changes to a team that treats impartially to both drivers but the team did not fight for the championship in red bull anyway not going to let you win.

Hi Mark, First of all i wish all drivers would push to the very end of the race and teamorders were not neccesary. But if en when they are given they should be respected .. you began to controll the race because of these orders and only because of that did Seb close the gap. What he did was totally unacceptable. He might appologise but i hardly believe he means it .. its a spoiled brat and just as you said he will be protected by Marko and the team.

It smacks of Turkey 2010. Appalling display of self-interested driving from your so-called team mate when you, on numerous occasions, have accepted team orders for his benefit. I was there for the Silverstone 2011 moment.

    On topic:

It’s quite clear who drove brilliantly and should have finished the race first (You) and who is a poor loser that can’t admit you were better today.

Good job telling him what’s what on the stage, he pissed off RBR, Mark Webber and even some Vettel fans today as well as pissing you off and creating unnecesary tension and disdain within Red Bull Racing.

His apology is nonsense as well, he knows who should have won but decided instead to risk ruining RBR’s race and robbed your victory and championship points.

I too am a great fan of mark, being an Aussie means being gracious and honourable in sport and in life (although some do push this boundary ie afl and Nrl) but don’t forget, he is fighting for a championship and that takes a different tact to be a f1 champion. Just look at past multi winners, Schumacher and vetal and alonso. All race to win, all with a win at all cost attitude…….I think mark being the gentleman he is, he won’t win a championship unless he starts to get a bit mean. This is f1, the big boys sport, time to learn how to start a race right and get a win-at-all-cost attitude…….and don’t forget to tell us about our nanny state! My emotional side agrees with David however I think Vettles petulant and immature side will one day seriously bite him. Mark a great win in Malaysia, I look forward to many more visions of your skill as a F1 driver and I think in spite of the pup (Vettle) this year is promising to be another where I am able to sit back and enjoy watching the current masters of F1, yourself and likes of Alonso ( a pity about his early retirement in Malaysia). Great race, give the pup a toffee apple and get someone to change his nappy. I will be watching when you are in China.

Heaps, because he obeys team orders Clearly, in this last race Mark has the car and the talent to win races and challenge for WDC. The laps times all reflect that (am talking to you “duhh”).

It was a great race, with a bit of a sour ending, but don’t forget everything that went right. THE START WAS EXCELLENT! (which is what has been missing from quite a few GPs) strategy was good (though changing to the soft compound was a bit odd, but I’m no race engineer) and there was some nice hard racing in there.
Take the positives, keep at it and throw away the team orders next time they come up.

I was there when you finished an amazing 5th in Melbourne on debut with Minardi and I’ve taken dad to every Melbourne GP since. You always handle yourself like a true professional. That’s why fans have so much respect for you here in Aus and around the world. You are a team player because you have respect for your team, unlike other drivers. The race yesterday will be a defining moment in your career as well as your teammate’s. You could have punted Seb off the track but decided not to. You were the bigger person and always have been. I’m glad you made a statement on the podium. You chose your words very well. I don’t know how you restrained yourself but that is why you are a professional. It needed to be said to a world wide audience. It was clear that Adrian Newey was very proud of you on the podium. I wish the Melbourne GP was coming up, rather than just gone, because you would see how much you mean to us back home. Use what happened last night to win the championship mate.

At some point later in the season Vettel is gonna need Mark to slow down or pull over and if the RBR team do not think he will then its over.
That and only that is the question Mark needs to ask himself while he chills out in QLD, nothing will ever change the bias RBR show towards Vettel, nothing short of a stroke will keep Dr Marko’s mouth closed.

Mark, really gutted for you yesterday. What Vettel did was unacceptable – it was far worse than what Ferrari used to do with Schuey, where team orders favoured the better driver; this was a team “mate” completely betraying the trust you and Red Bull had in him to be a team player. Disgraceful, and whilst I wasn’t your biggest fan before, I am now willing you on to win the championship. Keep your head up and come back stronger.

I must admit that I am not one of your fans and go as far as to say that Vettel will outpoint you over a whole season even if things in the team would be equal and I am totally against team orders at least for the beginning of the season. After mid season it is hard to tell a team to risk a championship especially as Ferrari and now Mercedes do not adhere to that.I do however firmly believe you were robbed yesterday and also believe it was a team order not just Vettel spur of the moment thing. If Horner or the Red Bull team where not in on it they could have ordered Vettel back as there would have been enough time. I know you can only criticize the team so much but it was a dirty programmed team decision and only you where left in the dark and did what your were told.I hope you will stay and have enough spine to race from now on no matter what is asked of you.I like champions that win on talent and not on gifts like Vettel,Schumacher and I might add Alan Jones against Reutimann.

The team really needs to step up to show some more support for Mark. After the rubbish that came out of Marko’s mouth (but hey the team printed it in their own publication – which is just as bad as the words themselves) and then Vettel’s lack of respect (not to mention previous incidents – this is now 2 maybe 3 race wins now that Vettel has taken from Mark) Now is the time for them to show support for their driver – Heck even if it was a Intern who had only ever fetched tea and biscuits and they just handed in her resignation to go to Caterham, they shouldn’t have to cop what Mark has. In a perfect world, they would send Marko back to play with the kiddies in the sandpit at Torro Rosso and if it was me on the front wheel gun…Think I might have a little trouble getting the wheel nut off next time Vettel is a leading a race from Mark with a big gap behind because it was a slap in their face too.
The whole team needs to let Vettel know that it is not OK because he plays for them too.

    Hey Mark ,
if anybody needs 10 laps before the end of the race support from the team to win the race ?!? Now erverybody is disappointed and upsed? With team strategies like yesterday in the second race of the season they will kill the sport! ( also Mercedes F1 ) If a team like RB1 need to react like yesterday so early in the season ,in dont understand the sport anymore . Vettel has done the right desicion , pehaps not for you Mark , but i think for the sport.Take it like a man. The next race will come ,chance for revenge. I hope its a mens sport and not an sissy event . Best regards from good old Germany . Mike , just a F1 fan who wants to see real races and no processions

      on March 26, 2013 Reply

Mike – your comment could be seen from another perspective; why did Vettel ask the team to move Mark out of the way with 10 laps to go, is that not asking for ‘team orders’? Yes, there are a lot of F1 fans out there that don’t agree with team orders, and Mark is generally the first to want to ‘let driving do the talking’, but it’s a highly technical sport with many complicated variables and whether it’s obvious or not, team orders have always been a part of the sport, and for better or worse are currently legal. It seems that the real issue that is coming across loud and clear in the fan comments, whether they agree with the reasons that led to the situation or not, is the arrogance and clear lack of sportsmanship shown by one driver when both were issued clear instructions.

A leopard does not change its spots – when the opportunity arose Vettel stays true to his form of the past. The problem is not only Vettel but the team in implicitly condoning his actions. Whilst he has “some explaining to do”, I would be surprised if any meaningful sanction is made for disobeying team orders. Time will tell. As for Mark, he is fighting with one arm tied behind his back. How can he win when he and his “teammate” are asked to preserve their cars and one follows instruction whilst the other disobeys and takes advantage of it?! It’s Red Bullshit if you ask me.

Seb’s attitude was obvious long before the last pit stop. Mid race when he told the team to “get him out of the way” shows that he has no respect for you or the team. He expects everyone to get out of his way and give him a clear path to victory. You cannot work with someone who has no respect for others and cannot be trusted on his word.

Mark, you are a true sportsman, a team player and deserve much better support from Red Bull. For the first time ever I have sent an e-mail to Red Bull. Here’s a short extract

“I’m also a Red Bull fan, an Adrian Newey fan and, after this weekend, a Mark Webber fan. You will notice that I have omitted the “Wunderkind” Sebastian Vettel. After his conduct this weekend he has proved that he is not a sportsman or a team player – just a selfish and arrogant individual.
This weekend Vettel may have gained an 7 extra points, but he lost the respect of true race fans, disgraced the sport of motor racing and undermined the concept of team management. He has tried every way he can to gain an advantage over his team mate, both fairly and unfairly, but ignoring team orders and laughing in the face of Christian Horner is the last straw. It shows that he has no respect for his team mate, his team management or the fundamental rules of fair play and sportsmanship.”

No matter how many races he wins Vettel will always be known as the driver you couldn’t trust to be a team player. Good luck for the rest of the season. I hope you get better support from your team.

That’s a big mistake! He’s proven time and again that he’s not to be trusted. It’s completely irrelevant to him who or what he’ll place at risk in any situation, as long as he thinks there’s a net benefit to him.
To place any trust in him is to give him an opportunity to abuse it.

I love it how vettel was telling the team that mark was too slow and then he was 6 tenths slower on that lap…! mark was controlling the race and the little p***k couldnt hack it… at least its satisfying knowing you started from 5th, owned seb in strategy, were faster on the inters and he could only win by sly and unauthorised driving… mark your a hero…. horner grow a pair of [site manager edit] balls and punish vettel…like a race suspension… to send the msg… how many times has mark held the gap when asked…. unbelievable…! hes like a child that will always play up because he knows theres no consequence for being a little [site manager edit]!

Mark, I was introduced to F1 about 10 years ago via my partner who has always rated you as one of the best overall drivers in the field. He is an excellent judge of character as well and has always declared you a highly honourable man, a quality he also exudes. This honourable quality was never demonstrated more highly than on Sunday. YOU thought of the TEAM, not yourself. There are calls for revenge, but Mark, always be true to who you really are – a true gentleman. Being true to all the values your family obviously instilled in you whilst growing up will make your parents more proud than winning any race. Your restraint and poise on the podium on Sunday has won you more fans around the world than you can ever imagine. I’ve no doubt, they will be with me willing you over the line in first place in China in three weeks time

You’re a top bloke mate, don’t ever lose that Aussie Grit.

PS. My partner calls Vettel ‘Slapped Arse Face’ and after seeing him on the podium on Sunday, I’m inclined to agree!

One does not become a true and real champion simply because he wins every race. Maybe he has the fastest car and all the toys any spoiled brat feels entitled to. But without honor and fair play, all he takes home is a hollow victory. Before Sepang, I had given Vettel the benefit of the doubt. But after Sepang and what he did to you, all doubt have been removed. Clearly, Vettel sucks!

We saw (or heard) two Teams & two sets of orders given out at this race.
In Mercedes, Clear instructions to hold station. Both drivers followed team orders & a strong Team Principal who ensured both drivers followed the letter to the book.
In RBR, the same instructions and a weak team Principal who allowed a team member to disregard team orders.

As with the others, I’m 100% behind you on this. You out classed your team mate & the win was deservedly yours.

Whilst we, the viewing public, don’t like having to watch cars stay in station as we want to see racing, true fans understand the need for this & accept this as part and parcel of F1.

SV will no doubt get away with disregarding team orders. CH needs to grow a set and stamp his authority on this.

Will this all be forgotten about in a few weeks? Not Bloody likely. Maybe in years gone by but not in todays well connected world.

Enjoy your 3 week break & looking forward to China to see what fun and games that race brings.

    Peace out 😉

“Four or five laps to go, they started to chat to me about holding my position. I wanted the points but I also wanted to get some more points as well.

“I just wanted to race to the end and I’m sure if it had been the other way round it would have been like that as well.”

Defending drivers’ champion Vettel, 24, said he understood why the team asked them not to race each other but conceded that he had enjoyed the battle.

“I try to stay ahead, nothing wrong with that,” he said.

“If you have the cars quite isolated in second and third, with the first guy away and the fourth guy pretty far away, from the team’s point of view there is no point racing and doing something stupid.

“The difference between second and third is not massive but we naturally try to race. I tried to hold position. I was struggling, Mark was faster and then there was the chequered flag.”

Vettel added that he thought the situation had been blown wildly out of proportion.

“To me at this stage it is quite amusing,” he said.

“If it was the other way around, there is no point – of course I would like to overtake Mark at that stage, so no point trying to do something stupid. I don’t see why there is such a fuss.”

Good Job, keep it up. This time it was the other way around but none of you guys should give up any race. Better luck next time, I hope things will get better.

Mark, a lot has been said for and against what Vettel did. Most people with a proper understanding for the need for team orders will no doubt share the view that Vettel was in the wrong. Apart from blatantly disobeying team orders, he used an unfair situation to win. Your engine was “turned down” and he used this opportunity to take advantage and win. How can this be seen as a true racing spirit… He is good, but unless he grows up, he will not in my book go down as one of the greats. His statistics may paint that sort of picture, but humans are more than statistics. How we carry ourselves in failure and success are what really set people apart. On this level, your image has remained untainted. You have every right to be livid, but instead of stooping down to a childish emotional outburst and uttering foul language, you asserted yourself with dignity. Although it may be difficult, hang in there and rather have the saga strengthen you to go for it for at least the rest of the season. As a fan of yours, I would not want to see you pack up and leave. Also, try not to take too much personal baggage out of your precarious position within the team. If you were not there, the same would have happened to many other top drivers. Lastly, Vettel’s statistics look good, even those with regard to having luck, which is as much part of racing as raw skill, but you have proven time and again that you are just as quick, oftentimes faster, and less prone to succumb to pressure on the track. So, do not allow what you have no control over to taint your self-worth.

was astonished by Vettel’s behaviour, but, sadly, not surprised. When you ego is as large as his, which I understand is required to be a world champion, apparently, he will continue to do whatever it is he pleases.
I also think that the management at RBR, i.e., Christian Horner, lacks kahunas. If the team absolutely wanted Vettel to hold position, then why didn’t they make him let Webber pass him? They had 10 laps for it to happen and it didn’t.
I think Horner is the logistics guy at RBR, team manager, if you like, not the man that makes the key decisions. The decision maker, power broker, is clearly Helmut Marko, put there by Mateschitz.
When you have a guy like Helmut Marko running the show, who clearly loves Vettel from his days as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team (which by the way is RSM Marko team renamed in about 2004 and sponsored by Red Bull) what can you expect.
His position on who he favours is clearly obvious to all. It was Marko that publicly said the accident between Vettel and Webber at Turkey in 2010 was Webber’s fault. And I am pretty sure that is was Marko that made Craig Lowndes life a misery when he raced in his team in formula 3000 in 1997. Now admittedly Craig didn’t do so well, and he was up against a more favourable team mate in Juan Pablo-Montoya, but when you have a team principal that refuses to talk to one of his drivers in English, what must that do for morale.
Anyway Mark, chin up. I hope you get to beat the spoiled little brat fair and square, on the track, but with the way RBR do things, I don’t like your chances.

    To Mr Mark Webber,

I am a 35 year old Australian in Sydney that has watched your career since well it started. I watched as you missed your first F1 championship by 1 win in which it could be argued that earlier in the year
when Vettel took you out that was the reason. But you know over the years we could also argue the mechanical failures and pit stops and even car computers.
But we don’t, Mr Webber you are cast from the same mould as every Australian, an ANZAC an Aussie feared by many world wide for beating the odds and never giving up.

Today we no longer have ANZAC’s fighting wars at gallipoli that we can teach our kids to look up to for inspiration and the never say die attitude, we have you.
Mark you were at this team before and at it again first before the Vettels you always chose teams that struggled for the challenge and this year, well this is your year to give us fathers a hero
to tell our kids about, give us a hero that we can use as example of a person that never gives up. An Aussie term we invented at ANZAC Cove some 70 years ago “Shit Happens” but we never finish that saying
with “Give Up” So you are currently the number 2 driver in the world and you have been for 4 years now, that aint such a bad achievment and that only means you are a second off being number 1.

Stay with the team show you never give up, take the fight to young Vettel and show Mr Marko why ANZACS were the most feared, admired and loved soldiers in the whole world.
Mark I run a business that has gone broke three times, but I still run it and now in my fourth attempt I am winning. Show the world you are a man of value, get rid of the negativity you have a car
that is as good as his but you have many many more years of experience as a driver, you calls Mr Prost as one of your close friends then learn from him to keep fighting even if there is a Senna in the team.

Mark I would love and 20 million Australians would love to see you race this year and next year and for Red Bull, Yes it is a personal decision but mate it does not matter if Mr Marko supports you 20 million Aussies
support you! Kick this young bum and show the world that they should be envious of the Aussie ANZAC spirit!

    God Bless and Good Luck

    Hi Mark,
Firstly, a brilliant start and great drive.
I for one who has followed you when you started your racing career and remember you are a champion in the eyes of the many fans who watch F1.
You are by far one of the most respected drivers on the 2013 grid.
What Vettel did this past weekend was arrogant, disgraceful, unsportsmanlike and shows he is not a team player and prepared to thumb his nose at the team.
I can remember the many races you have had to follow team orders and stay behind Vettel. He seems to have a short memory. As the saying goes what goes around comes around.
I sheet the blame fair and squarely at the feet of RBR management, but you guessed it they do not have the balls to to do anything about it.
The sad thing is that the younger generation have little respect for the mature age person, who they can learn so much from from. It is down to attitude.
You have handled yourself in a very professional manner and that is why you have much respect around the world.
Mark, let that Aussie grit and determination shine through, this is your year to win the WC for 2013.
All the very best for the next race and for the rest of the season.

Great drive Mark, total shame you followed what the team asked of you and turned your engine down allowing Seb to ignore team orders and run away stealing your victory. I hope this spurs you on to greater things. What’s Seb going to do next season when he has to put up with maybe Daniel kicking his ass every week, sook and leave the team? Ask Helmut to put the clamps on Daniel. Yes, Vettel is triple world champ and has everything that comes with that but his infamy will be long remembered. We are all aware of the tough team environment you work in and that SV is the golden child, but you helped build that team into the team it is well before SV came along. The team should show you more respect and show faith in your great ability.
I’ll finish by saying that the remainder of this season will be the closest thing we’ve seen to the Senna/Prost battles! You have the mental strength to beat this guy and judging by the look in your eye and the way you’re driving this year…..I think this has to be your year!

I just read that Christian Horner has been quoted as saying

“….. He [Vettel] is a race driver, a fiercely competitive individual,’ said Horner of his misbehaving champion. ‘You don’t win 27 grands prix and three world championships without being a very driven individual….”

So does that mean that Horner respects a selfishly competitive approach to racing as opposed to the team approach.

Mark too could have had a competitive approach to Vettel’s actions. Mark could have raced Vettel to the end and put at risk the one / two win, with two likely outcomes being an accident or inability to finish the race due to fuel or tyre wear.

Mark instead chose to safe guard the team’s success ahead of his own.

If I were the major sponsor I would be looking at ‘how’ the team I aligned myself with won a championship, as a reflection of the brand I was promoting.

It is my opinion that Christian Horner’s comments, and the way he and management has handled the situation, reflects poorly on the Red Bull Brand.

As an Australian Hotel owner, I think it is time for a move from selling Red Bull to selling Mother.

Good luck to you Mark for the rest of the year and for your championship aspirations. Unlike management, I hope the team supports you over Vettel, in the same way that you supported your team and their efforts ahead of your personal championship aspirations.

Sunday you were the true winner on all levels in everyones eyes. You won a few thousands more fans and lot, lot, lot of people finally realized what kind of person the other guy really is… and they could see right through the RBR political garbage…

Absolutely disgusted with finger‘s behaviour (..actually I never liked/supported him..). No excuses can justify his actions and I don‘t believe his ‘cheap’ apology!
What about the “..get him out of the way..” ????? message? Demanding team orders when things don’t go his way and ignoring them later when it’s in his favour !? He just ignored a team order and a pre-race agreement/code ‘multi 21’…

3 WDC‘s plus those 7 extra points on Sunday, but NO RESPECT, NO HONOUR, NO PRIDE, NO DIGNITY, NO TEAM SPIRIT..

On lap 45 it was a fight between a turned down engine and a car on harder rubber VS a disgraceful finger on medium rubber.. He robbed this win and the 25 points! The most disappointing and frustrating thing is, there will be no further consequences for him!

SO PROUD OF YOU MARK !!!! YOU CAME OUT OF THIS LOOKING LIKE THE TRUE CHAMPION THAT YOU REALLY, REALLY ARE !!! HOPE YOU’LL RELAX AND ENJOY THE SURFBOARD, THE WAVES, THE SUN AND THE WORK ON THE SIMULATOR..

Hey mark I’m not an Aussie but one of them bloody annoying Kiwis, listen mate we’re all ANZAC’s and how do we fight best? You’re going have to have to learn to fight fire with fire when the crouts bombed the crap out of London remember what our guys did to Dresden they gave them a taste of their of their own and more. I’ve followed F1 for years than I care to remember my first GP was in 1961 at Ardmore in Auckland the guys that make it are guys who have a burning desire to win. Don’t do a Deny Hulme by trying to win world title and not win a race the point system these days allow you to do that. You are going to have to go out the each and every race seeing Vettel as your greatest threat. True Aussie grit says to hell with it I’ll attack him at every opportunity can you imagine an all blacks verses wallabies game where the coach says to one team or the other cruise it’s never going to happen. Over the years I’ve played enough sport to know that you’re ultimately there to take the top prize. By you being more aggressive the team benefits they want the points. The major problem I see with Vettel is nobody ever forces him into making a mistake and leaves him stranded in the tyre bundles. If this is what it takes then for you to move up to that next level you may have to play the game his way. Stop being Mr. Nice Guy be the winner and another tip during Qually sit slightly off the back him as the clock winds down then you get the best run, that’s what he’s been doing over the last couple of years and the best thing to put yourself in the prime position niggle away by getting under his skin, we all know he has a short fuse.

In future Vettel will always have the question mark beside him as to how much of the little shit’s success was him and how much was the team; but people will always say “that Webber, now that’s a man.” Always remember that. I’m biased, but the whole world knows Gilles Villeneuve was the best ever, and he gave up a championship under team orders and was screwed by them as well. Hey Mark, amazing how the truth comes out. Not sorry for winning?? Arrogant twerp. Race hard and give no favours. Never again. It’s all or nothing now. Amazing how fragile those wings can be and how wide you can make a car.

Ignore the orders mate Vettel’s a spoilt child. Ram him off the track it worked for Senna and Schumacher.

Surely F1 can see that sebatian vetell may be very good at driving But he sadly proved with Mark Webber he is not a sportsman. its easy to be sorry when you have changed the result to suit yourself F1 is full of Sportspeople Vettel needs to find a way of showing that he is like that, At present I do not believe he will change people mind unless perhaps a Public apology to Mark Webber
