2013 Malaysian Grand Prix – race report

Car 1 SEBASTIAN VETTEL, Finish Position: 1st, Start Position: POLE POSITION
I messed up today. I would love to come up with a nice excuse as to why I did it, but I can’t. I can understand Mark’s frustration and the team not being happy with what I did today; I owe an explanation to him and the whole team. I will try to explain to them later. We talk about this situation happening many times and what we will do if and when it happens and normally it doesn’t, but today it did and I should have translated the call into action. I got the call and I ignored it. Mark and I are used to fighting each other when we’re close, but with the tyres how they are now, and not knowing how long they will last, it was an extremely big risk to ignore the call to stay second. We could have ended up finishing eighth or ninth after destroying the tyres in those two laps; I put myself above a team decision, which was wrong. I didn’t mean to and I apologise. I’m not happy I’ve won, I made a mistake and if I could undo it I would. It’s not easy right now and I owe apologies to Mark and the team.”
Car 2 MARK WEBBER, Finish Position: 2nd, Start Position: 5th
“I think Sebastian has respect for me and I have respect for him, but the situation today was not handled well. It’s hard to put your finger on it all now after the race; when we’re racing on the limit and pushing as hard as we can, then it’s the worst situation for a team. I am sure they are bricking themselves and know that things can go wrong. There’s a bit of history to this as well; my mind in the last 15 laps was thinking about a lot of things, but I was happy with the way I drove. I tried to isolate what happened at the end and we got something out of it today, but of course I’m not satisfied with the result. This puts heat on a few people and unfortunately there’s no rewind button. I know people want raw emotion from us after these situations and it’s there, but we need to remain cool. There’s three weeks until the next race, so time for us to work on things.”
CHRISTIAN HORNER, Team Principal: “Before getting into anything else, it was a phenomenal team performance from the car and pit crew today with the pit crew recording fantastically fast stops. We recorded our fastest ever time on Mark’s second stop, which is possibly a new best-ever in the pit lane. Obviously there’s an awful lot of debate about what happened at the end of the race. Our position after that finial pit stop was all about managing the race until the end and conserving our tyres, getting the cars to the finish and achieving maximum points. Unfortunately drivers’ interests can sometimes come into conflict with the teams’. Sebastian decided to take things into his own hands today and race Mark, thankfully making a clean pass and switching the order to the flag. It’s frustrating. Formula One is both a team and an individual sport and sometimes there is a conflict between a driver’s desire and a team’s interest. What happened today is something that shouldn’t have happened. It’s something that Sebastian has apologised for and it’s something that we will discuss internally as a team.”
THIERRY SALVI, Renault: “It was a tough race. I think we managed well with both engines and fuel consumption was under control throughout. It was easier to control temperatures due to it being wet at the start. I think the set-up we provided worked well. It was quite tight between both engines in the race and they were similar with engine performance.”

What happened today is a big insult to the F1 competition as a sport. Sport should be about the best ones. Today, Mark was the best. But somehow Red Bull Team “engineering” manage to insult fans around the world. I do support Mark, but not Red Bull any more. Fair play is something that Red Bull team needs to learn a lot about. Hope that RB’s principal and Vettell will have tough season this year.
I also do hope that this will encourage Mark to be better driver than the RB’s pet Vettel. Mark – stay a great guy, you are better than that spoiled kid. You are number one.

Mark has every right to be angry. Seb’s public apology seems proper, but it’s just words. He has done this exact thing before, and I think it was in Brazil where Mark turned his engine down and Seb did not. It’s one thing for Seb to apologize, it’s another to see him change on the track. He behaved like a spoiled child today, and frankly such a child needs to be spanked. If not, he will not change. Mark was the best man today, and made a dynamite start.

Mark is dignified in the face of a very rough outcome. Some will argue about ‘racers being racers’ but no-one is bigger than the team – ask Alex Ferguson about that management philosophy. Vettel was arrogant and unsporting. Stay dignified Mark and the victory, morally at least, is yours.

It is good to see every body understanding the mistake and Vettel apologizing. But it is hard to forgive what happened as it is not the first time. We heard how he was jealous seeing Mark in front of him on the middle of the race. Some body has to keep him under control as it seems he has difficulties to do him self. Any way it was very good race. Congratulations to all the team.

Christian, there is one fundamental point you failed to mention is saying the Formula One is a Team & Individual sport, it’s also majority a fan sport, if you put your fans off side, what have you got? No fans, no support, no interest, no teams, no race. Seb can say what he wants, he can be sorry on paper, but in reality he’s not and never will be, he’s just another Michael Schumacher, an arrogant German who has no respect for his team, his team mate or the team principal.

It was really nice driving for you, Mark. Surprisingly good start (:D) and constant, stable race pace along with maximum usage of tyres performance. This is ungrateful from Sebastian after all that perfect job you did on the track as a person. You were the only one who deserved 1st place in Malaysia. I hope you will figure things out both with Seb and with the team and next one will be “multi 21” 😀

It’s clear after today’s incident that Sebastian cannot be counted as a team player. He blatantly disobeyed team orders, he has the right to question those orders as did Nico, but not liking the answer he pushed passed Mark. He will brush this aside as a mere distraction to his own goals. The team is already making the excuses needed to hide their discomfort. I have a lot of respect for Christian, but today he lost that for not taking control of the situation. Have we seen the demise of team Red Bull and the rise of the Vettel Racing team.

What Vettel did today was not a sign of a true world champion,he said on the radio:”Mark is slow,do something about it…”Something like that and you may correct me if I’m wrong.Ayrton Senna is regarded as the greatest driver of all time, yet I do believe he didn’t became a great by being the undisputed no.1 at the then Lotus team, setting a record 65 poles or winning Monaco 6times,but by driving against Alain Prost in 1988 and ’89 in the same Mclaren,no team orders and no special favours.I’m not a Red Bull or a fan of any of its drivers but well done Mark coming from fifth you did a great job and you deserved to win today…Seb is a spoiled brat and should behave more sportingly…and Mark you are a great driver.

That was an awesome drice by Mark yesterday! Led for the most of the race and did everything right. If not for the very poor showing by Vettel, this should have been a win for Mark. Vettel has said he would undo it if he could. Rubbish. The performance and behaviour of the bloke (and with precedent showing similar is his true nature) is such tht he will do whatever he feels is in his own interest first, second and third and cop the (meager) consequences from the team later.
Mark is a true champion and an example to all the world of a good sport!!

Mark is the real winner, unfortunately he doesn’t get the points due to his self-centred, arrogant so called “team mate”. I’m very disappointed in Vettel and what he did to his supposed team mate but really it’s something you would expect from him. Only thinks about himself. What makes it worse is the fact that they were told to slow down and stay in position, Mark did the right thing and was swamped by Vettel and he didn’t have the chance to do anything as he had already done stuff to his car to slow it down. This makes me dislike you even more Vettel, I thought you were bad before with your arrogance but now you’ve dug even lower. I would not spit on you if you were on fire. I wish that Mark had of left Red Bull last year.

Watching the events unfold over the last few laps was shocking to say the least. I have every admiration for the professional athletes that they are, but in all the years I’ve been following F1, I’ve never felt as uncomfortable as I did watching that podium presentation today. Sebastian showed himself as a selfish precocious child. But you know what, all manner of drama adds to the wonderful mosaic of F1 that we all love. I will continue to watch with love and enthusiasm.

Had my comment deleted last week, maybe I should hold my tongue this week just like Mark. Firstly congrats Mark you drove a great race. Time to take advantage of your form and put some top races together to show you deserve the support of the team. All of Australia (and most of the racing world) support your cause. I thought Mark drove very well today and did enough to win within the team’s race plan. But if Sebastian is not effectively chastised by the team then how can Mark have any confidence in them to assist him fairly in winning races. It is clear to me that Sebastian plays by his own rules and that for Mark to have any chance of winning he must do the same. Of course this attitude would not be beneficial for the team in the long run and so the team must put this right. If a Red Bull one two occurs again this season with Sebastian leading then he should be made to hand the win to Mark.

Seb was frustrated early on with Mark in front , begging the team to allow him to overtake even though , at the moment of his frustration , Mark was quicker on the track. So , to a TV viewer , it was obvious that Seb was bound and determined to get his way at any cost. He must be a very difficult teammate as all prima donna’s are.

The race showed Vettel’s lack of respect in many regards. As a professional racer, setting an example to young drivers and aspiring drivers. Team orders are there for many reasons, most of which us fans don’t like. However it was a cheap victory taken.

Seb always comments on trying to emulate the late Senna. Today he showed why he will never be regarded in the same light. Sure Senna was a hard racer and did alot of things we did not like, but he was a gentleman and a professional.

Mark has handled the RBR protected Seb Species thing well over many seasons. At least today it was put out on the table for all to see that not only does Seb have no respect for Team values but also his team mate who no doubt would think twice from now on about helping Seb if required in future races ie being a bit of a blocker between him and Seb if leading, also if Seb had no car left and needed to limp home Mark would well be within his right to fly right past.

The teams reaction on this one moving forward needs to not only be fair to Mark and Seb with regards to consequences but also to it’s fans. If not, our group (over 100 RBR fans) will be returning all gear purchased and remove all sponsor support and brand support associated with RBR. In addition we will be rallying to all RBR fans through various bases to do the same.

Mark is a professional both on and off the track, Seb is just a spoilt child who can’t be managed. Multi world champ is more so a reason to show more respect, maturity and humility to fellow racers, team and fans alike.

Solutions moving forward? I say remove radios from cars, pit boards only, tyres that allow the cars to run as fast as they can and no team orders. Lets get back to real racing not driving at 8 tenths. This is F1, the ultimate and not some economy drive where the race is over 3/4 the way in.

Dear mark , i know after something like this happens the first thing we do as humans is let it get to our hearts and distract us from our main objectives , in formula one the team has protocols in place and i think that sebastian has showed his true self now and his lack of maturity , you had the race won and you dominated the whole race for a MAN to say i didnt do it on purpose and then do it goes to show that your not a truthful person your infact a liar that is something that makes it hard to be team player with so my main wish for you mark is not to let this distract you in any way shape or form , stay on the path , work on your setups and do what you know your capible of because in malaysia we all seen what you can do 🙂

I do not think it is fair that Sebastian Vettel should be allowed to keep his points for a “win”. This was not a win. He should be made to forfeit the points and Mark receive them instead. If RBR attempts to “sweep this under the carpet”, it will ultimately force Mark’s hand…and his legs to walk away from the “team”. It is high time RBR stood by this honourable man. Well overdue.

Good race Mark .I think you should consider asking for teams orders for the next time Vettel is in front and your behind him. He should be told to let you pass. If they cant do this then you got no choice than to repay the favour and wait till Vettle turns his engine down. Im sure its hard enough to win a race without your team mate cheating every time your in with a chance to win. Most of the cars are similar performance anyone can see its difficult to win a race now.

But what i saw from the race in Malayasia was not good for the sport, which i think right now is a very loose term for F1, to call it a sport. Fans want to see racing to the chequered flag. They are turning the whole thing into a joke.

So Vettel said to Mark in parc ferme that he didn’t hear the 21 call and yet he later says that he ignored it.

If that is true, then he is blatantly lying to his loyal and highly professional team mate.

You drove like a true Champion today, and the few Aussies that we have here in Tokyo were all cheering you on, even the ferrari fans. The world learns how SB really is, a little like MS before him, that kind of breed. The positive is your competitive and still alot of races to win, which would be great for you this year.

It is well known now with the information available by telemetry, and the fuel and tyre issues that need to be managed that the team has good reason to control the drivers at some points of the race – Seb went his own way. But, big question for the team – what exactly is Marko supposed to be there for, nad if it seems he has long outstayed his usefulness why not show hime the revolving door to Bradbourne Drive? Surely Mr Mateschitz knows by now that Adrian and Christian can run the team without outside interference?

Vettel’s behaviour was nothing short of an absolute disgrace. Red Bull encourages this type of behaviour by failing to discipline either driver sufficiently for their prior indiscretions. Seb and Mark are both guilty of this in the past. Seb more so. He is the wunderkind, unashamedly biased favourite of the Owner. After Vettel passed him, Webber should have pulled into the pits, turned off the engine and walked away from Red Bull forever. Red Bull management clearly does not respect Mark. I suspect that behind closed doors they have one set of rules for Vettel (do whatever the hell you like, including screwing over your team mate) and one set of rules for Mark (always do the Team thing). Mark was clearly the better driver all day, legitimately working his way from 5th to 1st position and maintaining it. Walk away Mark. You will always be considered 2nd best by the owner and he will always justify screwing you over for Vettel’s sake

Agree with Mark Main, graeme in perth and Leszek. The problem is that Vettel has already gotten the winner’s punctuation and if mr. Horner really believes F1 is a team and individual sport, he has to punish Vettel somehow – on the track. If Red Bull (and almost whole F1) were more opened to pure competition, there wouldn’t be so many scenarios to discuss “what do do if…” up to the point to determine what competition is. This kind of things helps to have absurds like Vettel as youngest tri champ.

Mark you are a genuine sportsman with honesty, humility and integrity. You are worth 10 of Mr Vettel. Christian Horner needs to take charge NOW or resign. John Watson’s suggestion of at least a one race suspension for Mr Vettel is the MINIMUM punishment. Mark please do not let this dissolve into a Villeneuve/Pironi re run. Mr Vettel is NOT WORTH IT. If Ferrari (our team since Gilles) are stupid enough to give him a drive in the future I will give up watching F1 – I have watched or visited every grand prix since April 1963. We are with you Mark. You maintained your composure after having to deal with that and you gained massive respect for it. You are a world class driver and regardless of how the team treat Vettel you have and will always have a huge fan base that has the utmost respect and admiration for you. Forget what I or any other fan thinks – ask the greats, ask Jones, Moss, Stewart, ask them about real camaraderie and then ask Mr. Vettel, who clearly has an eye on history, if he understands that no one who can recite the world champions from memory will forget the depths he stooped to for 7 extra points and how that will lead to him never being ranked alongside drivers who never won a championship. You could also ask Didier Pironi’s son, Gille, how he got his name and how one shameful act casts a shadow on what was a very decent career in F1. Nowadays many people only support the winning drivers…for my sins my favourite driver of all time never won a race in F1 (but started ’00s!). I’m a Kimi fan, but hope it’s Mark vying for the 2013 championship alongside.

I would suggest Mark deliberately ignores a team order endangering both of them in the process. BUT, Mark would in all probability be sacked forthwith and the Red Bull management would all gather behind the real danger in the team. It really was great driving from both of them but it is also clear that Mark pulled out of it because he is a responsible man, not a petulant little scroat prepared to wreck, maime or kill just to win.

Cruising on a race track to save tires, while Mercedes is knocking at the gearbox of your team-mate – that wasn’t a great team effort either, was it?!? F1 is about racing, not about queueing in line because some masterminds made their strategic decisions. Orders like those from RedBull, Mercedes or Ferrari are killing the sport. If I were you I wouldn’t want to win like that and raise a donated trophy on the podium. Show the world that you’re fast enough to win without a team order. The car is good enough – are you?

Agreed that team orders is bull, but they have long been a part of motor racing whether they were ostensibly prohibited or not. For what it’s worth, Webber had Vettel covered yesterday once RBR gambled on the early change to slicks for Vettel. Vettel complained that Webber was too slow and radioed to the pit wall for the team to get Webber out of the way, but then he fell back from Webber (and if Vettel’s “that good of a driver,” why did he need to ask the team to have Webber move over in the first place?) On the last tire change, RBR gave Vettel the preferential strategy, bringing him in first and putting him on the faster medium-compound tires. They did this to make sure Vettel covered Hamilton, but by holding Webber out there longer, it cut Webber’s lead from about 5 seconds down to nearly nothing.

Had RBR followed normal procedure, they would’ve given Webber the preferential strategy and brought him in first, in which case he would’ve maintained or slightly extended his 5-second lead on Vettel–but Vettel might have slipped to third during the cycle of stops. Thus, RBR’s tactical decision to give Vettel the better pit strategy on the last stop made sense, but it certainly cost Webber most of the lead he had built over Vettel. And in light of the order to turn down the engine mapping and KERS settings to conserve fuel and tires (and arguably to conserve the engine and gearbox), an order that put Webber at a power disadvantage when he complied but Vettel did not, it wasn’t a straight fight when Vettel decided to disobey the team order.

But that’s not really the issue. The issue is insubordination–Vettel effectively thumbed his nose at the team principal. Christian Horner needs to do something to assert his authority and control over his drivers. If he decides that the only way to manage these two is to throw team orders out the window and let them race each other regardless of the consequences (i.e., Turkey 2010), then so be it. If he decides that RBR is going to embrace the Ferrari ethos and make Vettel the number 1 and Webber his lapdog, then so be it (though he might want to consider giving Barrichello a ring, because I don’t think Webber would agree to it). But if he intends to keep the current course and let these two race each other, within reason, until the last set of stops and then hold station, he’s going to have to threaten both drivers with sanctions if they disregard orders from pit wall again.

I’ve seen it reported that a few ex-drivers are recommending that Horner bench Vettel for a race. At first blush, I thought that was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard–it’s only going to hurt RBR’s driver’s and constructor’s championship chances, right? But the more I think about it, the more I think Horner’s got to be prepared to do that if he wants to maintain control of RBR’s two highest-paid employees

You drove a great race on Sunday Mark, definitely one of your most dominant grid-to-flag performances (and a great start!) – Seb’s actions were low, and his excuses were really poor. But even then, the way you raced him for those couple of laps before backing off was awesome.

I just hope that Sunday doesn’t reduce your drive and hunger for racing and F1, because you’re honestly the best thing to happen to the sport and an inspiration as both a driver and a proud Aussie.

The fact that you can go out there and dominate the reigning world champion in a car with a turned-down engine, cooler tyres, and little warning from behind, and be the bigger guy and show the grounding and humility and resilience to back off just shows it again.

Enjoy the good surf weather while it lasts, and good luck in China mate – let your driving do the talking!

vettel only closed up and overtook webber because webber turned down his engine as instructed to preserve engine, gearbox, fuel and tyres, (it is the right thing to do for the long f1 season, for the constructors championship and for both the drivers’ safety, as you certainly don’t want the engine suddenly blows up or the tyres pop when they are doing like 300 km/h) and vettel didnt follow that instruction. You can clearly see when vettel actually overtook webber after a few challenges from vettel, webber deliberately gave vettel more than enough room on the outside to drive past in order to avoid any accident, webber didnt try to push vettel to the grass or did anything silly. Webber was driving smart as always, and a good team player as a professional. F1 is always a team sport from the very beginning, I understand that only 1 driver is driving each car, but behind each driver there are hundreds of people designing the car, maintaining the car, the whole team, all the sponsors and all the related parties. The drivers are only part of the whole team, the drivers are driving for the team, and not the other way around. Webber’s car is always heavier than vettel’s car, due to webber is at least 20 kg heavier and much taller than vettel, the position of that extra weight inside the car will make the whole handling geometry different. Although both cars are based on the same design but vettel’s car will always be that tiny bit faster. I am not saying vettel is fast only with a faster car, but despite webber being the oldest on the grid, webber is still one of the fastest drivers out there with good spirit. I am not saying he must be the fastest driver but he is definitely one of the fastest one out there, there is no question about it. Go webber!!!

Dear Mr Webber,I’m of an age where I remember watching Ronnie Peterson driving absolutely flat the whole way through the original Woodcote on opposite lock and Keke Rosburg’s 64 second lap around Silverstone in the 1200bhp Williams (turbo) Honda. So over the years I’ve seen quite a bit of F1. What I saw on Sunday left a bad taste in my mouth.
Although the press has quoted you as saying your phone is going to be switched off while you’re surfing in Oz, I hope that is for public consumption only!
I would hope that the phone line between you and your management is white hot at the moment.
I sincerely hope sir that you continue in F1. I’ve always respected you as a driver and person. When you’ve done well you’ve enjoyed the moment – if you’ve made a mistake you’re the first to put your hand up and admit it. The difference between you and many other F1 drivers is that you have a sense of fair play and moral integrity.
I very much hope you decide to stay in F1. I firmly believe there’s an F1 drivers championship waiting for you.
You do have the moral high ground at the moment and I hope you and your management take advantage of it via:- either getting RBR to give you a 2 year extension to your contract with the proviso of joint no.1 status – or a move to a competive team with the same sort of agreement.
I’m just guessing here but I’d like to imagine your management having a quiet word with teams now for 2014. Should a deal be forthcoming then you’d be completely free to ignore any team orders with RBR for the rest of the 2013 season! Good luck with whatever you decide. FRED.

    on March 26, 2013 Reply

The first reason why they limit the number of engines, gear boxes and tyres in a single season is to keep the overall cost of F1 to the minimum. When the running cost is down, then it will bring the performance difference from the big budget and the small budget teams down. Therefore we can have more exciting F1 racing. Because the teams can allocate more of their sponsored money into R&D, instead of putting too much money solely for the manufacturing of parts.
The second reason is that the more R&D the teams do, then they can develop or further improve technologies which can be used on our road cars, such as Honda VTEC, turbo, double wishbone suspension, carbon fiber, titanium, aero dynamics, etc. That is why they keep making the engine smaller, from v10 to v8, then next year v6 turbo. All of these are meant to make f1 racing more relevant to our road cars, except that they will always be open wheelers.
The third reason for keeping the cost down is to welcome more manufacturers into the sport of F1, since the cost of the sport has been kept a lot lower than the last decade. This will further create more competitive racing for the fans, with different engine manufacturers, and things like that.
All the above reasons will create a positive cycle to make F1 even better. Therefore in the Malay race, team orders from red bull to nurse the cars is completely understandable. It is only the beginning of the season, and in that race since Webber had been leading comfortably from Vettel for so long, there were only a few more laps to finish, and Hamilton and Nico were way off the pace. There was absolutely no reason to floor the cars to its maximum capability, and risk both the reliability of the cars and the safety of the drivers. If I am the team principle, I would do the very same thing for sure.

Mr Horner and Team owner need to appreciate that the Team is multiple World Champions because of Mark’s contribution. Vettel is a one man show. To publicly demonstrate Team contrition the total winner’s cheque should be presented to Mark by Seb in a very public attempt at apology and team bonding. Seb should also transfer a winning lead to Mark in this year’s event, in an obvious manner. That would seal the apology. Mr. Vettel must quickly learn he is an important member of a very large team, all of whom rely on publicity of the better nature.

I’m disgusted that the team management allowed the situation to happen. Unless they stop their favoritism, their unbalanced treatment reflects badly upon the company and upon its products. I for one, will vote with my dollar and no longer support them.

I guess Marko wasn’t purposely favour vettel from the very beginning, but because vettel is from germany europe, and webber is from australia, so in terms of overall marketing power to size of target audience, vettel is indeed many many times bigger than webber. And further, vettel is 11 years younger than webber, so vettel has an absolute advantage marketing wise. And we have to understand that the whole idea of sponsoring a racing team is to ultimately advertise their brand name and products, which is the red bull energy drinks. But it has been more and more apparent that the vettel’s favouritism is over the line.
In my opinion, Vettel is indeed a very fast driver, not saying he is the fastest out there, but one of the fastest. But in terms of luck then I think he must be the luckiest f1 driver in the past 10 years.
    1. He could have the chance to drive one of the fastest cars on the grid at such a young age
    2. Major accidents free, therefore injury free (look at webber’s injury from Tasmania, and the flying spring hitting massa in the head who only missed to win the championship by 1 point in that previous year)
    3. Vettel won in 2010 when webber and Alonzo were stuck behind slower cars due to poor pit strategy in the last race of the year
    4. A new tyre manufacturer comes in 2011, no one was able to manage the new tyres as no one had any data, but only vettel could manage that new tyres, it was like the tyres were tailor made to suit vettel’s liking and driving style. He won like 4-5 races in the first 6 races or something, it was unbelievable. I guess you can say he has got talent, but is he really that much a better driver than all the others that no one else could manage the tyres. Or is it pure luck that the tyres were designed in a way that they ended up to only suit vettel’s liking.
    5. In 2012, webber was ahead of vettel in the championship before mid year break, but after the break, webber had like 5-6 races where he had kers problem, or even to retire due to accidents he didn’t cause, etc. Vettel was driving the same car but no such problem, or at least very few of those problems
    6. Vettel were only able to win in 2012 because webber let vettel passed in the last race, then later Michael also helped vettel to achieve those extra few points to beat Alonzo at the end. Dont forget Michael is also a german driver, and the last 2 years before he retired for the first time, Alonzo won those 2 years, so I am sure Michael would rather want vettel to win than Alonzo.
    7. Mclaren starts to supply the ECU to all the teams from 2013, at the very first race of the year in Melbourne, webber is the only car had an ECU problem and needed to be reset, it happens in the warm up lap, so it was seconds before the actual start of the race, webber had no chance to get it fixed in time for the race start, how unlucky is that. And later he had a kers problem.
    8. Melbourne ECU and kers problem, malay unfair overtake from vettel, the first 2 races this year have been very bad luck for webber

It doesn’t matter what we say to Seb here. What “may” matter is some form of mass messaging to RedBull. It goes against their corporate image to constrain drivers and then allow someone to break the rules in front of millions of viewers. It is as if red Bull a multi billion dollar organisation can’t control their employees.

In response to “eagle” above; you miss the point entirely; Mark was told to turn down his engine, THAT IS WHY VETTEL GOT PAST HIM! No one, PARTICULARLY MARK, wants a trophy handed to him! Although, there might be one driver who wouldn’t care how he got the prize…
Apropos Vettel’s apologia; what a carefully PR crafted response! It REEKS of PR manipulation and insincerity! Vettel’s ego is as monstrous as it is immature. I have totally lost what little respect I had for him as a driver. By the way, does anyone know what businesses the team owner has, because everyone should steer clear of them, maybe then he will contemplate his mistake in giving Vettel total protection from censure, and possibly realize this sport isn’t for the soul aggrandisement of his little ‘German trophy puppy’!!!

I believe the only honourable, salvageable thing that Red Bull can do to satisfactorily placate Mark Webber is the following – Red Bull need to clearly announce that, as disciplinary action against Seb Vettel, for this season, Mark Webber is their number one driver and Red Bull’s primary focus will be on him, and all benefits and priorities previously heaped on Vettel, will be Mark’s. Let’s face it, Mark has likely only 2-3 seasons left, Vettel likely has 10+. One year of humble pie will make him a better person. This will either a) teach Sebastian Vettel some humility, discipline, morality, integrity, honesty and respect, sadly lacking currently, (and therefore make him controllable), or he will b)disobey orders again and be subject to strict disciplinary action. Anything else is both an insult to Mark and Team Management / orders and continues to give Vettel an open licence to continue to disrespect his Team Management and team mates. Take a stand Red Bull. Make a decent man out of Vettel. Spoiling him only increases his childish, petulant behaviour

Think about it, if you were driving right behind your team mate (at the same time team mate is also your worst enemy and toughest competitor inside the team) and you know you could get the victory and score maximum points out of it… wouldn’t you just step on the accelerator and wave the sucker you are passing good-bye? F1 is about a team attacking the F1 championship. No one person can do it with out a team yet one guy in the Red Bull team thinks its all about him and him alone.

Sorry Seb, its not just about you.

With Vettel in the team, upon Mark moving on, while the money on offer to a new driver will be beyond question the best, (better than the number 1 in other teams) who wants Marks old seat when they know with come a clause attached that says your not allowed to finish ahead of your team mate.

Christian Horne has created an out of control brat who may kill someone if he is not controlled.

Mark you make me proud, thanks for flying the flag.

But you are not such a puppet that’s why you fight and I don’t understand why don’t you quit being humilated and go for a team where you can bring in your experience and enjoy racing..maybe not winning but in RB they don’t let you win neither

    For Mark,
Given the way Vettel acted in Malaya, I think he has set his mind on how he is going to react for the rest of the season.
I think you should now drive your own race as it is quite clear Vettel is out to win a third championship at any cost.
You took the mature view and action to ensure the team ended up with 2 cars over the line.
Vettel’s arrogance and attitude is now out in the open, he will do it again!
This is not the first time his arrogance has been demonstrated and next time treat him like you would a driver from another team when you are fighting for position.
Best of luck for the season.

Vettel’s actions put me in mind of another recent outstanding German driver name of Schumacher. As good as he was he was unable to keep himself from pulling unsportsman like stunts at the expense of other competitors. I have to admit that I never liked Schuy especially when he talked, it was like butter would melt in his mouth. I must also admit that my taste in drivers are more in the form of Button, Webber, Massa, etc., you know those who may not be considered to be the ‘stars’ of their teams but are blessed with a work ethic which is inspirational. When these guys win a race or out perform their prima dona team mates, that makes the race for me.

Vettel cheated to win! It wasn’t just disobeying team orders that meant Vettel was able to pass Webber. Some might think hes faster than Webber thats why he past him. But Webber had turned his engine down making it a unfair fight. Vettel should have at least showed his hand and told the team he was going to race so Mark had the opportunity to decide whether he turned down the engine or raced him. My guess is Mark would have raced even if it meant burning out both of their tyres and not finishing. Mark would preferred a chance at a fair race rather than second.

I think people such as German in here, do not quite get what makes a GREAT driver
    Some of the qualities needed
1 A superb driver, MK is
2 A wonderful personality , such as MK, Button Massa, in this comp, and Moss, Clarke, Stewart in bygone times
3 The respect of your peers and the crowd, Vettel lost those , it was doubtful if he ever had peer respect in the beginning
    4 Modesty, charm, wit, courage
You can be GREAT as was Moss, the best, but he was the best , never to have won a drivers Championship
SV is smart in other ways, multilingual, but very churlish, petulant and immature in other ways
Maybe his parents never showed him the way, who knows. There are many reasons
But keep it reasonable here, some of the censored posts , lower the tone of this site:)
I thought SV had made some progress with his maturity, but , whoops back to the creche
Whatever, there will be more fallout for sure
I will ponder this as I split my winter wood

Tut, tut, naughty, naughty, Seb. Applaud his lack of integrity through your lack of action. What team rules? Obviously Sebastian Vettel rules. You are wrong to think that race fans only remember winners. Just as with Michael Schumacher, he was an egotistical cheating a***hole, so with Sebastian Vettel, and if Red Bull applauds that by omission, it owns it and will lose my respect and admiration (and countless thousands of others) in response. Red Bull management still has the opportunity to recover this if it so wishes. I won’t be holding my breath. Pathetic.

Anyhoo, curious, I just visited Vettel’s site for the first time, lo and behold it is ONLY in German! There is no English translation, which is both odd and gives some insight, that being, the sport is global, and english is the global language, so why not have it available and, also, Spanish and Chinese etc, so this site too should think more broadly in terms of the global fan base. Anyhoo, Vettel would do well to allow online comments, could not see any, just a snail mail land based address you post to. It is too much control, and all very, very German!

Mark, I wonder if you ever do read here? You should, us ‘poor’ fans, (those who can’t afford your annual fee) are some of your most ardent supporters.

Anyhoo, I hope you maintain your dignity and aplomb, take no prisoners, and make sure your team does not fiddle with your starts, and gives you perfect pitstops, as we saw for the most part in Maylasia and, study Vettel’s drives, like he did yours once, to improve his performance on particular track you won on, use his tactics…

I am a little bit over people commending Vettle for apologising like it was big of him? His selfish actions left him with no other course of action, the world was watching unless he wanted to come across as a complete asshole he did not have a choice, in this day and age public image also equals dollars in his pocket, he couldn’t risk the corporate sponsors thinking he might not be such a good ambassador. So again the apology was for selfish reasons not from remorse.

Unfortunately Mark I disagree with your comment that he respects you, I don’t believe he does or anyone else for that matter.

Life not just elite sport causes us to have to deal with difficult situations and decisions, how we choose to handle those situations and the decisions we make is what defines our character, Vettle showed his true character arrogant and concerned with only his pride. Mark on the other hand obviously was aware of the efforts and expectations of the entire team, he could have chosen to make a real fight of it which would be a racers natural instinct, and risk neither of them finishing, thus the teams efforts being for nothing, but he chose to consolidate second place and sort it out later, as always the consummate professional.

He is by far not the best driver in f1 only got his titles thanks to the brillant RB car and the team having him as no one driver mostly because of rich and influential germans in charge. shame for mark as i like him a lot hes a true pro. im not saying that mark is the best out there cause alonso is with no doubt. and surely any of these drivers would win given vettels car and team support and drivers reel potential is only measurable when he outperforms the car which is not on top. vettel is like schumacher was all their titles counts for nothing in my book they for sure are not the titles for beeing the best drivers, theh will definietly think about themselfs as the greatest and couldnt be more wrong. this is the world that we live in very far from beeing just.

Hey, other Webber fans, let’s send Horner the message in no uncertain terms. Let’s try to get a campaign to go viral for a protest on the Sat & Sun of the Chinese Grand Prix to boycott purchases of Red Bull energy drink, and show the major sponsor that people vote with their cash. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark the year before he made his impressive debut at the Australian Grand Prix with Minardi. It struck me then (and remains to this very day) what a decent bloke Mark is, probably the most level headed guy on the grid. I have been following Mark’s progress in F1 through his whole career and he deserves to be treated with more respect by his teammate. He is a brilliant example of a sportsman and his team should be very proud of him. Whatever your views on team orders, when they are imposed, you must respect them, like Nico Rosberg did, for example. Vettel disrespected authority and gained his 27th race win. But at what cost? He has positioned himself as a man not to be trusted, and certainly a man with no honour. Best of luck for 2013 Mark, you would be a shining example of how a true champion should behave. PS: Before F1, I asked if I could interview you again, to which you said “Yeah! No problem!”. I hope we can talk again soon 😉 Will be cheering you on at the next race 🙂

He could make a more genuine attempt at showing real remorse for his dubious actions by giving Mark P1 the next time it’s possible to do so, but I’m afraid it’s very unlikely to happen given the German’s mind set.

Thought Red Bull would be filthy with Vettel but after listening and reading Chritian Horners comments, I was not surprised how quickly he appointed some of the blame for Vettels actions away from him and towards Webby. The result was not surprising after hearing Vettel was on a different strategy and as most suspected had more HP at his disposal for the supposed cruise to the finish line (faster compound as well). The rest is history and Red Bull artifically manafactured the result to ensure their GOLDEN CHILD had an unfair advantage over his TEAM MATE at the business end of the race:(
Shame – Red Bull – Shame.

Stand strong vettel, the waves of hell from this shockwave of a mistake will beat down on you in the future.

.. and yes you do have to look at the MW vs SV history to see how strained it is.

    Good Luck Mark.

I do hope you do well this year Mark and i realy would like you to drive on another few years. Christian Horner should have told Seb to give back P1…but he obviously doent have the stones to do whats right!!
MW for the 2013 championship. Dont let these floggs beat you down Mark…your better than them as a man.

Vettel did not over take during Mark’s pit stop. He did try and try and try many time to pass. Obviously he did it purposely. He was lying whoever he was speaking to after the race that he had not known what he was actually doing. Seb, you are in big time trouble in the upcoming races unless the team doesnt give Mark a bad car, purposely. Last season they made all the necessary upgrades particularly for Vettel. No any upgrade did suit Mark’s driving.

Christian Horner’s radio message says it all: “C’mon Seb, this is silly” when what he should have said forcefully was “Seb, do not engage, multi 21, do not engage”. You were robbed of the win earned through superior strategy and good pace. Maybe it’s time to give Eric Boullier a call? Also, with the change in engine profile for next year, would it be better in a factory team or a customer team.

Mark, I hope you read at least a few of the thousands of comments posted here and elsewhere by your hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. As an Australian I am proud of your sportsmanship, dignity, decency and genuine humane qualities. I think Jacques Villeneuve (World Champ 1997) summed up SV very well – I’ll quote him “He (vettel) is super fast but he’s a man without honour and respect, so for me he is not a great champion or a great man.”
Irrespective of what the decision is on your future Mark be it in F1 or Le Mans or neither you are an inspiration to many 🙂

In short, I think you are a terrific driver. If you could ever get your start worked out then things would be substantially better. You just need some clean air! Finally, do not get distracted by the bad behavior of Vettel. Keep your mind clear and your eyes on the goal. All of my family is pulling for you. The best of luck !

After reading the strong show of support for Mr Webber on this site I decided to visit Mr Vettel’s site looking foward to reading the perspective given by his supporters on the race. Maybe my iPhone navigation skills are shite but no where could I find a section for public feedback on the race from his site. It was all one way traffic from Mr Vettel. This tells a story in itself. Mr Vettel has an occupation all of us envy and in this day and age has an obligation to open himself to the people who support F1 given that without our support the sport disappears. Hope to be proven wrong and look forward to receiving a link where I can read the German’s supporters views on the race.

I also checked Vettel web site. See what says Christian Horner:

Sebastian Vettel may be the today’s villain, however, Christian Horner reckons any and every driver – including Mark Webber – ‘would have done the same’.
“He is a race driver, a fiercely competitive individual,” the Red Bull team boss told the Daily Mail. “You don’t win 27 Grands Prix and three World Championships without being a very driven individual.
“At times you do not have control of them, as much as you would like to. All you rely on is that they respect each other, the team and the equipment.

Does it mean that the team orders don’t matter; you are not expected to obey? Mark Webber is also free to do what ever he wants ???
A team boss who accept that he can not control his team!!!
A team boss who protect the driver who didn’t obey his order against the other one who obeyed!!!
    Very strange team management!

Mark – Vettel’s action was inexcusable, and totally underhand. It was your race all the way.
Best way to square up…? Don’t get mad, get even. Just serve it up to him, and ferkget team orders.
…Ohh…and just be careful you don’t punt him into the fence, because that would more than redress the 14 points margin he just stole from you….

Vettel does a dis-service not only to his team mate who continues to show enormous dignity but to Formula One, its teams and sponsors. Soon people will be turned right off the sport as there is no pleasure in watching the antics of a man who is perceived by many as being little more than a spoiled brat. The interest in the sport will decline, advertising, tv and sponsorhip revenues will decline and the sport will suffer.

Mark, just be true to yourself as you always have been and enjoy the respect of all those who follow Formula 1 and above all remember that you are the winner. Your team mate is never likely to experience the repect that you have. He only knows how to measure success by numbers and not by true quality.

Listening to the new SV interview on the net is just surreal….is this kid for real. Seb, you have been raised the wrong way mate….and im afraid, that the only thing that will save you is a good old fashioned flogging….a good punch in the head. MW just keep doing what you do….being a class act. Its just crossed my mind recently, that if being a triple world champ means youve got to be a f…witt then its not worth it. Seb & Michael both embarrass themselves with their childish petulence. It makes me sick.
Scrap and fight hard for the championship Mark, and keep playing fair….you dont want ever put yourself in Sebs company by lowering yourself to his shitty standards.

I hear commentators like young Will Buxton explain it away by saying “hey these guys are racers. I say let them race on. Vettel is ruthless and that is what it takes to be a champion”

I am aghast that the concept of honour has completely left our society. Mark has plenty of honour and he displayed maturity beyond years to keep his mouth from repeating many of the thoughts that surely were running through his head.

Sebastian has lost all his shine too me. Anyone who puts himself above others and disobeys team orders to do the most unsporting of things deserves to be benched. Then I hear a comment about how many millions of dollars are involved in a decision to bench him. Honour has no price. Christian Horner is obviously just a baby sitter to a petulant young spoiled favorite child. He only placates Sebastian and hasn’t the honour to stand up and say: He did the most unsporting of things today, so he will be sitting out the next Grand Prix.

Mark stands head and shoulders above the rest of the paddock because of his calm demeanor in a very tough and “raw” situation.

Kudos to Ross Brawn and Lewis Hamilton AND Nico Rosberg for showing how a team principal is supposed to act, Lewis for how to be humble and Nico for demonstrating how much of a man he is by submitting his own will to that of the team!

Keep on the path Mark. Nothing will take the shine off of your actions. Sebastian has just shown what a non-sportsman he is and his star though it may continue to rise has lost all its glory.
