SEASON 2001
After the debacle of Le Mans ’99, Mark split with Mercedes and returned to single-seaters. He signed with Paul Stoddart’s new European Formula Racing team for ’00, winning a race at Silverstone, and he stunned observers with his testing pace for the Benetton F1 team at the end of the season. That led to Mark becoming Benetton’s test and reserve driver for ’01, a job that he dovetailed with another F3000 campaign, this time with Super Nova.
