Red Bull Racing: 2009

Mark returned to the cockpit just 10 weeks after breaking his leg and shoulder. He completed 82 laps of Jerez on his first day, giving him a taste of things to come: the RB5 was a superb racing car, of the kind Mark had only dreamt about. He went on to win two races and finish a career-best fourth in the drivers’ standings.
“The huge change in the regulations gave a lateral thinker like Adrian a big opportunity. We all expected something from him and he delivered. He produced a great car. It was consistently quick at every type of track and the story of the season might have been different had the double diffuser row at the start of the year gone the other way. I think that was very disappointing for Adrian.

I’m very happy with how the year panned out. With the exception of Suzuka, where I had a shunt in practice and missed out on another podium, there wasn’t much change left on the table from my side of the garage. My win at the Nurburgring was a huge moment in my career and definitely the highlight, but I drove a good race in Brazil as well, controlling it from the front.”

“My rehab dominated events off-track for the first six months of the year. To begin with, I couldn’t do anything myself and was completely dependent on other people to help me do things and drive me around. The first time I drove a road car on my own was a huge moment because it gave me a bit of independence. Even when the season was underway, the rehab was never far from my mind. I wasn’t in any pain in the car because the adrenaline took over, but as soon as I got out the pain was there and it wasn’t until the middle of the year that I could train hard and begin to think about other things.”
