Red Bull Racing: 2007

Following the arrival of design genius Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing was the dark horse for the new season. Mark immediately felt energised by the enthusiasm among the employees, many of whom he knew already from his years with Jaguar, but the car proved fast and fragile.
“I went to Red Bull Racing for two reasons. First, because Flavio told me to. He’d got a good crystal ball going and he’d been absolutely right about Williams, so I wasn’t going to disagree with him this time around. Second, the arrival of Adrian was a massive thing for me because his record in F1 speaks for itself.

We scored a good podium at the Nurburgring, but Fuji should have been our best result of the year. The rain made the conditions very tough and I arrived at the grid massively dehydrated due to a stomach bug. I couldn’t keep any food or fluids down and I even vomited in my helmet during the race. So when Sebastian [Vettel] ran into the back of me while we were behind the Safety Car, it shattered both of us. Neither of us had put a foot wrong all day and it was desperately disappointing to end the race like that. He stayed well clear of me for ages…”

“I’d underestimated how much I would enjoy racing for the guys at the factory in Milton Keynes again. They are a great bunch and many of the guys on the floor were still there from my Jaguar days, albeit with different management. Half of my F1 career has been with the same team effectively and I found it very motivating to be back among a team of people, rather than a group of individuals, as was the case at Williams.”
