Jaguar Racing: 2003

So began Mark’s relationship with the Milton Keynes-based team, which continues today as Red Bull Racing. Mark achieved his goal of finishing the season inside the top 10 and he was sensational in the new one-lap qualifying format.
“Niki Lauda was the guy who signed me at Jaguar, but I never got to race for him because five minutes later he was gone! I still have very good memories of my time with the team: I really enjoyed working with the people there and it was nice for me to drive for a mid-grid team because it meant we were in the thick of it most weekends.

I had a love affair with the Michelin tyres over one lap, but I found it very difficult to make it last over a long stint. That usually made the races pretty exciting, but we managed a string of sixth places and that was satisfying.”

“I started to feel a bit more established in ’03, so I began doing stuff with the GPDA, which I enjoyed. It was also the first year of the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge. It was pretty extreme; it was a challenge in the truest sense of the word and we learnt that it needed to be a bit more user friendly in years to come.”
