Korea
Turn 3: a good overtaking point, but tricky in the wet because you hit the brakes as you go over a crest.

Turn 7/8: two quick corners. They’re not particularly difficult, but you can feel the car working underneath you.

Turn 10: the exit is important because you’ve got to get the car back over to the right for the left-hander that follows.

Turn 16: a bump on the apex unsettles the car, which can cause the car to oversteer if you’re too aggressive with the throttle.

Given that the organisers had a completely clean slate, I was expecting them to do a slightly better job with the layout of this track. There are some good sections, such as the right-left where I spun last year, but the rest isn’t great. It’s like a big Hungaroring.

The last section feels a bit odd because the walls hug the edge of the track. I think they’re planning to build some houses and hotels here in the future, but there’s nothing at the moment and it looks a bit strange. It feels a bit like the Valencia street circuit through here.

The track was hardly finished last year and it had zero atmosphere as a result. But that was inevitable in the circumstances and fair play to the organisers: they bust their balls to get it finished on time.

Something that’s unique about this race is that the drivers all stay in the same hotel. Meal times can be a bit bizarre because everyone sits by nationality. The Brazilians have dinner in one place, the Germans in another and, being the only Aussie, I’m usually on my own!

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • Last year was Mark’s first visit to Korea. But that wasn’t the case for the drivers who’d contested the Korea Super Prix, an F3 race staged on the streets of Changwon between 1999 and ’03. Jenson Button finished runner-up in the event in ’99.
  • The inaugural Korean Grand Prix was stopped on lap three for 40 minutes due to the atrocious weather conditions. As a result, Fernando Alonso took the chequered flag to win the race as it was getting dark.
  • Korea has an impressive history of hosting global sporting events, having hosted the Olympics in 1988 and the World Cup in 2002 (co-hosted with Japan). The presence of an F1 race means the country has now hosted the three biggest sporting events in the world.
  • Construction of Jeollanam-do, the city that will surround the Yeongam track, is due to begin in 2011.
