Singapore
Turn 5: it’s very tricky to get the entry right and it’s an important corner because it’s followed by a long straight. If you’re struggling through here, you’re not going to do the lap time.

Turn 10: fiddly little left-right-left. You don’t want to ride the kerbs too much because they’re high and can destabilise the car.

2011 winner Sebastian Vettel

There’s a novelty value to the Singapore Grand Prix. We sleep until lunchtime every day, we stay up until the small hours and we race at night. It’s all a bit bizarre.

The race lasts almost bang on two hours and, being on the equator, it’s hot and humid. You lose a lot of water and that makes it a very challenging grand prix. Added to that, the lighting around the racetrack is artificial and it can give you a bit of a headache after a while, so you have to pick your visor tint carefully.

The circuit is pretty repetitive and it’s as bumpy as hell. There are a lot of 90-degree turns and then there’s Turn 10, the left-right-left chicane. It’s fiddly, but you have to respect it and be very accurate with your line.

Like other street tracks, the grip level changes a lot over the weekend. It’s very slippery to begin with, but it improves with each session – as long as it doesn’t rain. It hasn’t rained in any of the Singapore GPs to date and it’ll be interesting to see what the visibility is like when it does.

There’s no doubt that this grand prix is one of the better races to have been added to the calendar in recent years. We run right through the heart of the city, passed all of the famous landmarks, and there’s always a good crowd.

To date, Fernando [Alonso] has been the man to beat around here. He owns this racetrack. This year I’m going to fight him for it.

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • The Singapore Grand Prix is the only night race on the F1 calendar. The race starts at 8pm local time, two hours after sunset.
  • The Marina Bay circuit is one of the more picturesque on the F1 calendar. It takes in two of the city-state’s bridges across the harbour and many of its landmarks, including the Singapore Flyer, which overlooks the F1 paddock.
  • Mark finished third in Singapore last year despite driving the last 25 laps with a huge vibration after his right front tyre was on the verge of coming off the rim following a collision with Lewis Hamilton. “Another lap and it might have gone,” said Bridgestone’s Hiroshi Hamashida.
  • In terms of time, the Singapore Grand Prix is the longest on the calendar. Last year’s event came in just two minutes shy of the FIA’s two-hour maximum.
