Brazil
Turn 1: the best overtaking point on the lap because you can get a good run on someone up the hill on the approach.

Turn 3: an easy corner in the dry, but you have to be careful in the wet. A river runs across the track at this point.

Turn 7: a challenging uphill right hander taken in fifth gear. You want the car to be well balanced through here.

Turn 12: a very important corner. You have to get on the power early to ensure you get a good run up the hill.

Interlagos is an amazing venue. It’s one of those places that talks to you because it has so much history. A lot of the greats have driven on this track and it hasn’t changed much over the last 30 years. Ever since [Ayrton] Senna won here in 1991, it’s a race that I’ve really wanted to win and it was very satisfying to realise that ambition in 2009.

The track is at high altitude, so it’s tough for the engines and its anti-clockwise direction makes it pretty physical for the drivers. You feel it in your neck and you feel every bump, of which there are many.

The atmosphere is always good at this race because the fans are very passionate. They’re vocal in their support of the Brazilians, which makes the drivers’ parade good fun and the grandstands overlooking the
grid get very noisy. In a way, the race reminds me of the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, where the crowd is almost on top of the cars.

You can see the sprawling city of Sao Paulo from the track. A few years ago, I asked Red Bull to take me to a youth club because I wanted to see a bit more of the city and we ended up at a boxing club. The equipment was very basic and the people there were looking for a second chance. That’s exactly what Senna was trying to give them when he started the Senna Foundation just before he died.

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • Mark won the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2009 after leading 51 laps of the 71-lap race.
  • Interlagos was the scene of Mark’s biggest impact in an F1 car. In streaming wet conditions he crashed at the final corner in 2003, taking three corners off his Jaguar R4.
  • There have been two Brazilian Grand Prix venues: Interlagos in Sao Paulo and Jacarepagua in Rio de Janeiro. Mark has only driven at Interlagos, which has hosted the race uninterrupted since 1990.
  • Interlagos first hosted a world championship race in 1973. The race was won by local hero Emerson Fittipaldi.

Hi Mark,
I am sure you will be doing all you can to win the Brazilian GP for 2011. I only hope RBR provide you with a good race car and when they call you in for tyre changes the team get you out in clean air and do not stuff up your pit stops. You can do it, lets see you on the top podium position on Sunday, it would be a nice reward for you to finish the season with your first GP win in 2011, as I am sure most would agree, you have driven like a true champion and provided your many fans with some great come from behind driving.
All the best & go that Aussie grit.

So, so good to see an Australian sportsman with your drive (pardon the pun), determination, skill and humour. For me, the best export Australia has! You’re the epitome of the Aussie Battler! Keep it up mate and good luck for the last race. I’ll be shouting from Southampton, Hants.

Tomo POSTED November 30th, 2011

Fantastic drive on Sunday Mark and richly deserved win! I especially loved the fact that you were advised to take it easy in the last few laps after you had set another fastest lap record but in true Webber style you went on to smash the fastest lap time again on the final run around Interlagos! Great Oz grit mate!

James POSTED December 01st, 2011

I watched the race from 3am to 5am on sunday, and it was amazing!
To take the win in Brazil, the final race of the season, was great to watch.

I am a massive fan of yours and wish you all the best for the 2012 season.

Fantastic race, Mark.
Wonderful job.

I really wish, as would every Aussie, for you to be at your best next season and giving Sebastian, Alonso, Lewis, Button, Massa, and everybody else on the grid a very, very competetive season.

Best of luck for 2012, James.
