Italy
Turn 1 (First Chicane): the approach to this corner is the fastest on the lap: 330kph. You’re hitting the brakes hard, but it’s still quite difficult to overtake.

Turn 7 (Lesmo 2): the slower of the two Lesmo corners, but a vital one because it’s followed by the long run to Ascari. The car feels very loose through here because you’re running so little downforce.

Turn 8 (Ascari): this corner is key. You’ve got to get the first left-hander absolutely right in order to get the right trajectory through the left-right that follows.

Turn 11 (Parabolica): you can waste a lot of time on the entry to Parabolica. You’ve got to be tidy and get back on the power as early as possible because the longest straight on the lap follows.

When I think of Monza, I think of Ferrari and the Tifosi because it’s their back yard. The fans go ballistic and it’s great to see the different generations in the grandstands: grandfathers, sons and grandsons.

The spectators will climb anything to get a good view. They sit in trees, on billboards and after the second Lesmo they sit on the old banking with their feet hanging over the barrier. They’re about six stories up at this point and you kind of want to ask Charlie [Whiting, race director] to put some catch fencing in for them!

There’s no doubting the Tifosi’s love of F1 and their love of Ferrari. They’re a bit more open in their support of the drivers and I certainly feel like I have an affinity with Italians from my days at Minardi. I spent quite a bit of time in Italy back then and it was good to experience a bit of the culture. The chaos is sometimes a bit frustrating and the policemen like to have arguments…

As for the track, Monza is very fast. It’s not as hard on the brakes as Montreal, but you still need a car that stops well, rides the kerbs and has a big engine. Strategy’s pretty straightforward because it’s not the hardest circuit on tyres, although the Pirellis will probably give us more to think about than was the case last year.

All in all, Monza is a very enjoyable weekend. The park is a beautiful setting and I love the way the banking remains unchanged. Last year I was lucky enough to do a photoshoot with Prada which involved us taking a helicopter to the track. It was great to see it all from the air.

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • Mark’s sixth place last year was his best result at Monza. Prior to that, his highest finish was seventh in 2003.
  • The highest top speed of the year is achieved on the approach to Turn 1 at Monza. Mark will exceed 340kph this year just before hitting the brakes.
  • The Italian fans, known as the Tifosi, refer to Monza as ‘La Pista Magica’ (the magic track).
  • Monza was the world’s third permanent circuit to be built, after Brooklands in the UK and Indianapolis in the United States. It was completed in just six months in 1922.

Today the race will be very exciting…
In MONZA the cars goes so fast
In my country today is a very important day and we celebrate it.
I’ll keep a “cava”glassto drink to you when you cross the finishing line 
“BONA SORT” from Girona(Catalonia)
By the way…”cava” is like champagne but better. You should taste it

Accidents will happen…Monza has been a bad day
When I’ve a bad day I choose a song and I listen it until my brain stops to think and starts to sing
For a bad day like today I would choose a song like”PACK UP” by Eliza Doolitle
GP Singapore could be a good day
