Monaco
Tabac and the first part of the Swimming Pool: this is a very quick section and there’s a lot of lap time to be gained by doing it right. You’ve got to be very accurate on the inside of Tabac; you apex very close to the barrier.

Anthony Nogues: the final corner is another big one. There’s a very narrow line through here, so you’ve got to be very accurate. I learnt a lot off David [Coulthard] about this corner; he was good there.

Massinet / Casino Square: both corners are blind, so you need to be very committed and accurate. You’re getting on the power long before you can see your exit.

Mirabeau through to the Tunnel: you need a controlled approach through this section. The corners are low-speed and it’s easy to over-drive the car. After the Tunnel you can be a bit more aggressive again.

Monaco

A unique circuit. You’d never design a track like this now, but there’s so much history and nostalgia surrounding the place that the race is allowed to continue. It’s a special weekend; it’s the one to win.

You’re not really racing other people in Monaco; passing is non-existent, so it’s you against the track. You get away with nothing, which means you’re more concerned with the circuit than the people around you. Every year, the first time you go flat-out up the hill from Ste Devote you have to recalibrate. It’s fast and blind and you have to change your head for the four days of the race weekend.

If it doesn’t rain, the grip level increases throughout the weekend as more rubber goes down. You have to get your head around that and it’s difficult to know how much harder you can push from one session to the next. It’s also a real momentum weekend; you need to be on a roll going into qualifying and that means exploring the limits a bit in practice.

There’s always a great atmosphere at this race. When you walk from the paddock to the pitlane, everyone on the hill is shouting at you. That’s something we don’t get at other venues and the interaction is very enjoyable. I’m not big on all the tits and the glamour, but the Monaco Grand Prix a unique sporting event. It’s not as tacky as you might think; they do it right, although you wouldn’t want every race to be like this. I tell people that if they’re going to go to one race, they should go to Monaco.

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • One of the highlights of Mark’s first F1 season with Minardi was overtaking Olivier Panis’s superior BAR-Honda at Monaco. He finished 11th.
  • Mark’s first F1 podium came at Monaco in 2005. He finished third, five seconds behind his Williams team-mate Nick Heidfeld.
  • After winning last year’s race, Mark got wet. First he jumped into the Red Bull swimming pool with his winner’s trophy; then he dived into the Monaco Harbour still in his overalls, before finally drying off to have dinner with Prince Albert of Monaco.
  • Mark has actually won twice in Monaco. His first victory came in Formula 3000 in 2001.
  • Mark owns a house in the south of France. It’s within commuting distance of Monaco, but he stays in the Principality over the race weekend to avoid the notorious traffic jams.
