Everywhere! The Swimming Pool, the Chicane – the grandstands are all in good places.

Tabac and the first part of the Swimming Pool: this is a very quick section and there’s a lot of lap time to be gained by doing it right. You’ve got to be very accurate on the inside of Tabac; you apex very close to the barrier.

Anthony Nogues: the final corner is another big one. There’s a very narrow line through here, so you’ve got to be very accurate. I learnt a lot off David [Coulthard] about this corner; he was good there.

Massinet / Casino Square: both corners are blind, so you need to be very committed and accurate. You’re getting on the power long before you can see your exit.

Mirabeau through to the Tunnel: you need a controlled approach through this section. The corners are low-speed and it’s easy to over-drive the car. After the Tunnel you can be a bit more aggressive again.

Monaco is still the one to win. I take a lot of pride in the success that I’ve had at the track over the years and my win in 2012 was certainly one of the toughest victories of my career. There were a few different strategies going on because the tyres were lasting longer than we expected and to complicate matters it started to rain at the end of the race. But I kept it on the island and took a very satisfying victory.

Monaco is such a challenging venue that you’re not really racing other people; it’s you against the track. You get away with nothing, which means you’re more concerned with the circuit than the people around you.

If it doesn’t rain, the grip level increases throughout the weekend as more rubber goes down. You have to get your head around that because it’s difficult to know how much harder you can push from one session to the next. It’s also a real momentum weekend; you need to be on a roll going into qualifying and that means exploring the limits in practice.

There’s always a great atmosphere at this race. When you walk from the paddock to the pitlane everyone on the hill is shouting at you. That’s something we don’t get at other venues and the interaction with the fans is very enjoyable. I’m not big on all the tits and glamour, but the Monaco Grand Prix a unique sporting event. It’s not as tacky as you might think; they do it right, although you wouldn’t want every race to be like this. I tell people that if they’re going to go to one race, they should go to Monaco.

AS A MATTER OF FACT…

  • Mark is one of only two drivers on the grid to have won Monaco twice. The other is Fernando Alonso.
  • One of the highlights of Mark’s first F1 season with Minardi was overtaking Olivier Panis’s superior BAR-Honda at Monaco. He finished 11th.
  • Mark’s first F1 podium came at Monaco in 2005. He finished third, five seconds behind his Williams team-mate Nick Heidfeld.
  • Old habits die hard. After both of Mark’s Monaco victories (2010 and 2012), he got wet. On both occasions he jumped into the Red Bull swimming pool with his winner’s trophy; then he dived into the Monaco Harbour still in his overalls, before finally drying off to have dinner with Prince Albert of Monaco. Mark has actually won three times in Monaco. His first victory came in Formula 3000 in 2001.
  • Mark owns a house in the south of France. It’s within commuting distance of Monaco, but he stays in the Principality over the race weekend to avoid the notorious traffic jams.

Fans “will get sick of seeing so many different winners.” – caused too much by the tyres on its own AND the have not found solution to use the tyres right.
I used to watch always all 3 practice sessions to get an unprofessional intelligent ;-) view for the weekend, to get a first prediction for the qualifying and the race. Sometimes right, sometimes wrong. But that was the excitement as well, beside the race on its own. And that is gone.
At the moment, a race is split by the first 3/4: good position, nice overtake, great racing, good pitstop, good strategy (like a race should be); and the last quarter: who saved the tyres most and can catch up. It is like, the first ¾ aren’t important anymore. They doesn’t affect the final result of the race as they should be. It isn’t an F1 race like it was so far, because of the mysterious tyres. But nothing (even a F1 season) can always be on a peak, up and downs are every time part of the game.
I wish, that one team will finally find the solution to use the tyres most efficient and for this reason is able to use the first ¾ of an exciting race to influence the results and finally change the last quarter from a game of dice to a thrilling predictable part as well. And I hope that RBR will be the first to break through this odd season so far and I hope it will be this weekend and I hope it will be you, who get a second Monaco GP win in F1 and repeat his excellent backflip in the pool.
Mark, do it! Feel the car, feel the tyres and push to the limit!
